Relaxing Weekend Getaway at ParkRoyal On Pickering

Hi Loves!

Recently I had the pleasure to indulge in a staycation at ParkRoyal  on Pickering, Singapore’s first hotel in a garden. The entire stay passed like a breeze, thanks to the great service, wonderful lush atmosphere and lovely food and drinks served. My bestie Fion and I stayed at the Orchid Club Deluxe Room and enjoyed access to the Orchid Club Lounge which provides afternoon tea, cocktail and breakfast. I fell in love with the hotel’s architecture which integrates organic lines and greenery so seamlessly. All in all, I definitely recommend this place as a weekend getaway for locals and a hotel of choice for foreigners! If you’re looking for activities recommendations, check out The Ultimate Singapore Day Out web app to plan your day according to your personality. 😉

My Morning Beauty Routine!

Hello my lovelies!

Morning Skincare Beauty Routine

Check out my usual face, at work, with no filter! 😛

Today I’m sharing a vlog of my current morning beauty routine! It’s a video that I’ve been wanting to do for the longest time, every morning as I run through the same routine, I imagine how fun it will be to share my experience and tutorial with all of you! So FINALLY here it is! 😀

I didn’t state on the video, I have combination skin; normal with oily T-zone and I’m concerned with enlarged pores on nose and cheeks area. So acne-care, hydration and whitening (lightening of blemishes) is important to me in my skincare. I also take care that all the skincare and make up products I use are non-comodegenic (does not clog pores). I’ve been using this range of products for about a year now. Also, I’m 23 going 24 this year. So skincare products for me have to be affordable as much as it is effective. As for make up, I believe in paying more for good quality foundation, blusher and eyeliner. While lip colour can be bought at cheaper prices (usually they are priced cheaper too) as I usually change my lip colour everyday depending on my mood and what I wear.

Products featured, in sequence:

Skincare:
Johnson & Johnson Clean & Clear Deep Action Cleanser with Microbeads
Johnson & Johnson Baby Cooling Powder (Back)
Johnson & Johnson Clean & Clear Essentials Oil Control Toner
Hada Labo Whitening Lotion
Hada Labo UV Whitening Emulsion

Make Up:
Estee Lauder Illuminating Perfecting Primer
Estee Lauder Double Wear Moisture Powder Stay in Place Makeup
Estee Lauder Pure Colour 01 Violet Underground Cyber Metallic
Maybelline Impact Express Smooth Felt Liner
Star Lash Golden Ratio Eyebrow Pencil
The Face Shop Lovely ME:EX Cushion Blusher in Coral
Mentholatum Q-10 Lip Gel / Maybelline Baby Lips
Etude House Lipstick in Coral (Not sure what range it falls under, bought it on offer in 2013)

I say “mmm-mhmm” too much in the video.

I will film another “My Night Beauty Routine” soon as well as
“My Top 10 Holy Grail Beauty Products” videos so do look out for them! 😉

Let me know if you have any other good video ideas that I can do! 🙂

Some pics I took the day I filmed the video:

Thanks Bunc@Radius for specially preparing these balloons! 😀

Check out the vent on the right of the balloons, these vents are there to provide fresh air ventilation. The system works by taking in fresh air from outside the building, runs it through a cooling system and pumps in cool air into each room and forces stale air out through an exhaust. Cool huh?

Ena’s Review
My friends and I had a lovely time catching up during our BBQ at the outdoor deck.
The open air concept, fully fitted kitchen, tables and chairs allowed us to have a fuss free BBQ.
We were particularly impressed with the dorm beds and fitting and toilets which were modern, clean and spacious.
Wifi was strongest at the lobby and weak in the dorm rooms,
so a lot of travellers will gather in the lobby to make use of the strong wifi in the area.
Bunc@Radius is definitely a place that we’ll come back to visit again. 🙂

Thai Chick Flicks on Youtube (with Eng Sub)

As you know, I am a fan of Korean dramas and movies. Recently, under the influence of a good friend, Ser Li who has been raving about Thai dramas and movies, I gave them a try on Youtube and then went on a Thai movie marathon. 😀

Due to the popularity of my previous post 5 Chick Flicks on Youtube, I decided to write a similar post but this time in Thai version. 🙂 So here’s a few movies and more that I watched and would recommend to you, with videos embedded for your easy convenience! 😉

1. First Love (A Crazy Little Thing Called Love)

crazy_little_thing_called_love.7y0abor6sk4cg440o8gkow0cw.9hognrvsmz8c8w8s00sk0koos.th

Review: This movie is really cute. It’s about how a young girl grows up and transform from an ugly duckling to a beautiful swan. Starring Mario Maurer, a really cute Thai actor! 🙂

2.  Fabulous 30

Fabulous 30 Thai Movie

Synopsis: Ja (Patcharapa Chaichue) a beautiful woman has everything a woman is supposed to dream of having; a successful career, a partying lifestyle, and a handsome sweetheart. On her 30th birthday, Ja finds her perfect life changed when her boyfriend wants to halt the relationship. Now, at thirty-something, Ja accepts a happy single life until a new guy (Phuphom Phongpanu) gets in her life and he’s 7 years younger than her.

Review: I enjoyed the down to earth moments of the movie, how the female lead cooks, feed stray puppies and checks out bridesmaid gowns with her girlfriends. The male actor is ridiculously handsome and is born in 1991.

3. Hello Stranger

poster

Synopsis: Inspired by Korean culture and entertainment that fluxed around Asia, the film tells a love story of a guy and a girl who destined to meet in Seoul during their private trip to Korea.

Review: Highly recommended movie. It’s funny, romantic and heartwarming. Funny thai antics in Korea? No wonder this movie is so highly raved! 🙂

4. Just One Second

220px-Friendship-thai-movie

Synopsis: Is a short film about a young couple…

Review: The couple acted by female lead Nattasha Nauljam and male lead Jirayu Laongmaneeacted (only 17 yo btw) together in a famous thai movie Suck Seed in 2011, a movie more on friendship but also with some youthful romance. Actually I can’t remember the ending of this short film. But I am using this to recommend Suck Seed, which unfortunately I can’t find the youtube link anymore. 😛

Also recommended:

5. Seven Something

Seven-Something-600x375

Synopsis: Seven Something is a love story and is shot by three different directors. As such, the film is divided into three parts; the first named “14,” about the problems of two teenagers and social networks. The second part is named “21/28” and is about two former actor and actress lovers who work together again after being apart for seven years. The third part is called “42.195” and is about a woman who meets a young man who encourages her to complete a marathon.

Review: It is a new age movie which follows three couples. The first on a young couple with social media influences and how it makes and breaks the relationship. Second one is a romance with several meta references, including Hello Stranger, I liked the second story the best. The last story starred 2pm’s thai prince, Nickhun, that’s all I have to say for the last story. Lol. I watched in on youtube but it was taken down, so you’ll have to find this movie else where! 😛

Till the next post,

A New Fashion Video Platform

Hello!

So today I’m blogging the third & last part of  my LASALLE takeaway series, ending off with my mid term research presentations, both the essay and the project.

StyleAsia

StyleAsia Teaser Video Cover

My final presentation’s on a business proposal for Asia’s first Fashion Video platform combining commerce and community. Imagine Youtube’s video platform, ASOS shopping site and WordPress or LinkedIn community. That’s what we’re talking about! I initially termed it StyleAsia. But for the final name it’s something else. I’m not posting about it yet or publishing it publicly… As I hope I can find a team or business to really create this platform, if God allows. 🙂

So what you’ll be seeing here today, for my essay research presentation, was my initial idea on the rise of blogging, vlogging and its impact on the fashion industry.

The business idea to create a bloggers management entity was later aborted because blogging is on a downwards trend. So I pivoted the idea to a video platform as video production and consumption is on an upwards trend. Cisco research says in 2013, 90% of internet traffic is driven by video content! Yeah baby!

So here are the works I’ve done for my final year’s mid terms!:

Research on rise of bloggers and vloggers and their impact:

Mid-term research on the Fashion Video Platform business concept:

Ohaiyo Japan~ (3) Traditional House Tour and Glass Frosting Workshop

Hello!

Today I’ll be bringing you Ohaiyo Japan 三 , pronounced san in Japanese which is exactly the same as in Mandarin! 😉

I left off at the end of day 4, where we arrived at the beautiful Isohara Seaside Hotel.

So now for…

Day 5! ^^

2013-03-15 07.27.19

Very tasty looking breakfast which I enjoyed a lot. Chicken, egg, wedges and banana.

2013-03-15 07.27.26

A basket of really thick toast for sharing. The morning light is so lovely eh? ^^

IMG_4207

Isohara Seaside Hotel’s entrance, taken from the coach.

And off we go for our first activity of the day, visiting students at Higashi elementary school of Takahagi City, Ibaraki Prefecture.

IMG_4209

Guess who we saw from on the coach? Mr Green Bird! Kekeke. He was the mascot that joined us while we played with the children during our short visit..

IMG_4210

Picture of the field where we lined up to wait for the children to join us. No photos allowed with the children, though we did take a few towards the end, but I won’t be posting here.

IMG_4211

Another clearer picture of Mr Green Bird, that the children LOVED and bullied endlessly…… Kids will be kids, no matter the nationality! >.< Some tried to climb on his back, some tug at his legs (!!!) and some pulled his little tail endlessly. I felt so bad for him.

We were very very sad to part with our elementary school friends, each pair of us were grouped with 2-3 children and we transferred 3 pots of flowers into the planters that we made from the previous day.

After our elementary school visit, we came to tour a traditional Japanese house, the Hozumi Family Residence.

The fire place and an example of how the kettle is hung! 2013-03-15 11.55.41Here I am excitedly standing under a plum tree that’s flowered in early spring. 😀

The next stop was Otsu port, where we observed and heard first hand experiences of the fishermen / staff of the Otsu port.

This starfish has unfortunately dried and died. Reminds me of the inspiring story of the old man why the young boy why he is picking up starfishes along the beach and throwing them into the sea when it is impossible for him to clear all the starfishes on the beach. The young boy pondered for a moment as he threw in another and replied, “Well, I made a difference to that one!” The story is adapted from The Star Thrower story written by Loren C. Eiseley and it speaks of the idealism of children and youth that can change the world. :’)

IMG_4252

The HUGE seagulls that were about the port. You can’t tell from this photo, but they were roughly twice the size of an average mynah or crow in Singapore. Probably because they thrive on the rich seafood in the area!!! IMG_4255

Here we see workers methodically packing away fresh octopus right from the buckets into styrofoam boxes with ice.

IMG_4245

A boat docked along Otsu port, in the setting sun.

Then we headed back to our hotel for dinner!

2013-03-16 18.17.38

A panoramic shot of our dinner venue in Isohara Seaside Hotel.

2013-03-15 18.10.35

Tuna and mushroom pasta which was super yummy! I am not a fan of tuna but I am a fan of this dish.  Infact I am a huge fan of Japanese and Western fusion pastas, like Spaghetti Goemon restaurant chain in Singapore. ^^

2013-03-15 18.10.40

Not sure if this is a Japanese dish, but it sure looks and tasted like the Vietnamese rice paper spring rolls!

2013-03-15 18.10.44

And yummy tempura fish with a very generous helping of tar tar sauce for sharing.

2013-03-15 18.10.32

Super yummy cream puffs! 5 to a table, each of us took 2-3 and finished the entire plate. 🙂

AS IF we didn’t eat enough. 😛 We headed out because we wanted to try the sashimi plate at the neighbouring restaurant but we were a step too late as they closed at 9pm so we headed to nearby local Japanese fast food chain, Sukiya.2013-03-15 21.36.30

The boys, Greggo, SJ and Alex.

2013-03-15 21.36.42

Adeline, me, Xav and Desmond. We look tired because we probably were but we didn’t want to waste our time sleeping in our rooms and wanted to experience more of Japan instead! 😀

2013-03-15 21.39.43

Obviously we were stuffed from the spread at dinner, so we shared this one beef rice bowl with raw egg dip! 🙂 You can choose to mix it into the bowl or take the beef, dip in the egg and eat it with the rice, we is what we did instead!

Day 6

Our first activity of day 6 was to visit Glass Workshop Silica and attend a workshop to design cups that would be frosted!

IMG_4271

The beautifully designed Glass Workshop Silica, with a modern, futuristic architecture.

IMG_4288 IMG_4289

My design, with a four leaf clover inspired design and “爱“ which stands for love, both in Japanese and Mandarin. The cups we design and frosted would be sold in the workshop and funds would go to the Kizuna Bond Project.

IMG_4299

Here’s our group’s resident quirky girl Beatrice while she’s intently at work!IMG_4301

Here Dylan our fashion design extraordinaire is designing his cup.

IMG_4305

And not missing out our super stylist Greg or aka Greggy Woo with his paisley inspired design. They were all too busy to finish up in the all0cated 45min to look up at me for the photos! 😛 IMG_4311

I had minutes to spare so I walked about the workshop and snuck this photo with my #ootd and the simply breathtaking background scenery. :’) I would LOVE to wake up to a scenery like this everyday!!!

For lunch, we came by to this place Ichiba Shokudou which is located right next to a fish market. IMG_4326

It was a super Tempura spread!!! Xav, standing up with the other seated Temasek Poly (TP) fashion design girls. IMG_4329

Omo, omo!!! Fried wedges, fried CHEEZBALLS, fried fish!!! <3<3<3 IMG_4333

Then we took a quick walk at the fish market and here’s a snap of fish sashimi for sampling! Thumbs up for fresh Japanese seafood!

2013-03-16 12.35.392013-03-16 12.35.47

Before our 1 hour lunch break was up, Ying and I snuck to this beautiful vast plain field for a quick #ootd shoot. My outfit’s inspired by Japanese school girl uniform, hence the school girl skirt, Peter Pan collar top, layered with a red cardigan with matching stockings.  Finishing the look with my trusty coat and boots which I wore for everyday of the trip. Both the coat and boots I bought from my HK trip at Mongkok, Argyle shopping center for about S$20 each. ^^

After the workshop, we headed to Hitachi Civic Center to prepare for our presentation. No photos for that today, but there will be when we are back again on day 7.

Dinner time!

2013-03-16 18.19.16

Delish fried fish and cookied veggies~

2013-03-16 18.19.30

More tempura fish, mushrooms and sweet potato.

2013-03-16 18.19.45

Chilled soba (Japanese for noodles) with soba sauce!

On this night, the group of us managed to make it on time to the restaurant next door for a platter of sashimi for sharing and ice cream! But I didn’t manage to capture any flattering photos as I was more caught up with eating. Heh.

2013-03-16 23.44.45

After our 2 rounds of dinner, we headed back to our room, specifically the one I shared with Ade and Xav for our group meeting sesh where we prepared slides and props for our presentation on what and how we plan to share our trip in Japan when we get back to Singapore. That’s how Kizuna 10 came about! 🙂

And with that, sums up Ohaiyo Japan (3), days 5 and 6!

We’re more than mid way into our Japan trip, this series of photos are taking a lotttt longer to edit and caption than I’d expected! AND i am gaining weight while preparing because looking at all these mighty delish food keeps making me hungry and snacking. 😛 Hope you are enjoying it! ^^

xx

Ena

Ohaiyo Japan~ (2)

Hello~

And YAY! For ROUND 2 of updates from my Kizuna Japan trip! ^^v

Ready or not, here we go~!

DAY 3

I left off after we checked in and spent a night at Hotel Omoide Roman-kan, Daigo Town, Ibaraki Prefecture.

IMG_3906

This is just round 1 of my breakfast serving! It’s an international breakfast spread with traditional japanese food like porridge and side dishes which I took in round 2 but not pictured! 😛

IMG_3919

We woke up to this BEAUTIFUL scenery. After breakfast, Ying, Greg and I decided to go for a quick walk and snap some #OOTD (means outfit of the day, for the uninitiated).

IMG_3925

Cute plants, what do you call this? ^^

IMG_3930

A candid photo of Greg shooting Ying’s #OOTD, using my camera’s miniature mode.

IMG_3937

Our lunch bento box!

After lunch we also went for a walk around our hotel! 🙂

IMG_3945

And we saw little birds lined up on the cables/wires. How cute!

IMG_3948

We also saw red berries along the way… Not sure if they were edible or not! 😛

2013-03-13 12.10.57

The view of Daigo Town, just behind our hotel! Lots of restaurants that seem to thrive from the tourists and also visitors that drive along the road.

IMG_3950

A closer look, the poster seems to say that the noodles are 100% handmade! 🙂

After lunch, we headed to Oku-kuji Recreation Forest area where we made wooden planters to  show support for the reconstruction of the affected areas, as our wooden planters will be used in the elementary school which we were visiting later during our trip. 🙂

IMG_3969

Materials for our wooden planter! Pieces of wood, nails wrapped in the newspaper and wooden hammer.

IMG_3970

A quick shot of our Lasalle team ^^ You can also see the place where we were, it’s all made of wood and a very beautifully constructed place!

IMG_3973

My buddy Ying very focused in putting the planter together! We took turns to hammer the nails in. 🙂

IMG_3979

Us with our constructed planter! ^^ And pardon our frizzy hair-dos that got all frizzed up in the high static environment, heh!

IMG_3980

Now you see us, now you don’t! >.<

IMG_3990

We also wrote encouraging messages on our planter! 🙂

IMG_4002

A shot of work that is still underway around the Oku-kuji forest area, taken from the coach, hence the blurry effect. IMG_4008

Then we came to Fukuroda Falls! It’s one of the top 3 falls in Japan, with a different look each season. 🙂

IMG_4018

Us again! This time in our coats as it was pretty cold! 🙂

IMG_4020

There, thought you’d like to see the view of Fukuroda Falls in the 4 seasons as I do! ^^ Ok I think it’s just Summer/Spring, Autumn, Winter and then a view of the lake during summer/spring.

IMG_4021

Sadly it’s end of winter so there was only a hint of green and not a very welcoming view but nonetheless you can see the the falls! IMG_4022

Another view of the falls, this time with the top of the valley in sight.

IMG_4023

And another! heh.

IMG_4025

Me and what seems like the mascot of Fukuroda falls! SO CUTE RIGHT. (Mascot, not me, in case you think I’m praising myself, HAHA) I just noticed the falls is pictured on his hat! Mad cute! Basically it says 大子町 on the hat, which is the Japanese name of Daigo and the apple and fish are produces that the town is famous for. Cool huh! 🙂

IMG_4053

A beautiful shot of the group while we walked down from the falls… 🙂 IMG_4056

At the base of the falls were a slew of souvenir shops and as were early in the trip, we didn’t shop intently for souvenirs but we sure did try out the snacks! Here’s a caramel mochi (japanese for rice cake) which is sticky sweet!

IMG_4063

This is the pretty amazing little stall that was barbecuing the rice mochis.

IMG_4060

Then the ice cream booth caught our eyes! Many flavours but only apple and chocolate left by the time we bought.

IMG_4064

Shot of my apple ice cream! I cannot emphasize how delicious it was, it has apple bits in it that I LOVE. Why can’t Singapore have this? >.<

IMG_4065

Our ice cream and our thoroughly satisfied faces! ^^v

Day 4

After breakfast, we made our way to Kami No Sato a local craft workshop for a class on handmade Japanese paper, known as Washi.

This is our workshop tutor, pictured with the frame where he sieved the fibre from the pool of fibre in front of him.

IMG_4107 IMG_4122

He then showed us how to make markings on the Washi in the frame.

IMG_4130

And quickly proceeded to fill the markings in with coloured fibre, in this case, red for the apple and brown of the stem.

IMG_4131

The various buckets of coloured Washi fibre where we scooped from for our artwork! 🙂

We didn’t have to do the sieving of the Washi fibre, so we just made the markings and filling in of the colours.

IMG_4146

My completed Washi paper decoration! Our works would be sold in the paper shop and funds would go to supporting Kizuna project, which creates awareness of the reconstruction efforts in Japan since the major disaster happened in 2011.

IMG_4147

Close up of my Washi paper, inspired by Japanese patterns and the produces of Daigo town, which is red apple and green tea. 🙂

IMG_4166

The lovely ladies at the paper shop where we bought ready Washi from! Can you see the beautiful paddle pop coloured papers which were used to wrap the items? Gotta love Japanese packaging! 🙂

IMG_4169

“色即是空” Japan is a largely buddhist country and this is a famous buddhist saying that means what is visible is empty, but an illusion. I don’t subscribed to buddhist teachings, but I find it interesting as it explains the Zen concept which Japan is famous for. You can also see a bit of the ceiling of the paper shop, which is entirely plastered with writings! IMG_4171

How the shop front looks like.IMG_4172

How the Kami No Sato paper shop looks like. It also has a small area for a museum of antique Japanese paper and books. Washi-making is a dying art and I am thankful we could experience something so uniquely Japan and culturally enriching.

IMG_4174

Shot of the road along the paper shop and workshops and a photo-ception with SJ in the picture!

Activity 2 for the day, which we were very excited about, visiting Setsuko’s strawberry farm to pick and eat strawberries!!! ^^V

IMG_4177

Mr Setsuko, the farmer and host telling us his experience of the disaster 2 years ago. He lost many customers as they stopped buying strawberries from him because of harmful rumours and they feared radiation but his produces have been certified to be healthy and fit for consumption. Thankfully his business has began to pick up and has reached 70% of customer support since the disaster struck. 🙂

IMG_4183

We took a walk through his tomato farm. The greenhouse technology is imported from Netherlands and Mr Setsuko expressed thankfulness that the structure and glass was very strong and withstood the severe earthquakes then.

IMG_4185

A happy looking tomato! ^^

IMG_4187

The greenhouse under the beautiful skies.

IMG_4196

Plum flowers along the road outside the farm.

And a picture of us Lasalle girls, from left, Ade, Xav, me and Ying with the flowers! Credits to Xav’s from her FB ^^.

We then arrived at our final destination of the day, which is the next hotel for the trip!

Ohaiyo Japan! (1)

Ohaiyo!

Ohaiyo is the informal way of saying Good Morning in Japanese, the short form of Ohaiyo Gozaimasu. I won’t be teaching Japanese on my blog here, as I only know of a few casual phrases myself. ^^

Have you checked out our Kizuna 10 FB page? Check it out and LIKE it here if you have not!!!

Over this week, I’ll be uploading photos from the 10 day trip that my school mates and I took back in March. We were very generously sponsored and invited by Japan to be part of the Kizuna (Bond) project as part of 100 Singaporean students and tutors to visit and indulge in the rich Japanese culture and heritage! You can check out more of the Kizuna project here.

Without further ado, here are some photos from the 1st 2 days of the 10 day trip that my school mates and I took back in March! 🙂

Ena Japan 2013

Japan Kizuna Trip 11th March – 19th March 2013 (Arriving back to Singapore on the 20th March)

Ena Japan 2013

Pre-flight, with my lovely travel buddy Ying! 🙂

Ena Japan 2013 2

The view from the plane as we were about to land in Japan… It was the end of winter and early Spring, thus the brown fields.

Ena Japan 2013 3

As we near nearing, we can begin to see the plane’s shadow! So cute right? ^^

Ena Japan 2013 43

This is how they unload the cargo from the plane! Yes, I had a very good view from where I was seating. ^^

Our plane landed at about 4pm and we were scheduled to reach the hotel by coach at about 6.30pm but due to peak period traffic, we reach only about 7.30pm! 😮

Ena Japan 2013 45

Finally got the keys to our room in Tokyo Grand Hotel! I love how vintage the room keys are. ^^ The yellow book is our very detailed and informative handbook for the trip! My schoolmates and I were part of Group A with other students from Temasek Poly and Raffles Design Institute.

Ena Japan 2013 5

How the hotel room looks like! Small but well equipped. Beds were very comfy. Japanese style robes were laid on the beds for occupants to change into. The view from our room shows the office opposite and at 7.30pm we still saw office workers working away!

Ena Japan 2013 4

The toilet is clean and well equipped.

Ena Japan 2013 6

As we reached pretty late, dinner was prepared in very dainty lunch boxes. It was far too much rice for us to consume… Heh.

Ena Japan 2013 7

Post dinner, our first night’s activity began with convenient shops shopping! HAH. There were 3 convenient shops around our hotel and pretty much nothing else. We would soon realize that’s pretty much all the shopping we could do during this except for the last day at Tokyo. 😛 Here you see MUJI stuff at their convenient store! In Singapore MUJI shop has its stand alone boutiques in town, Orchard. The prices are definitely cheaper in Japan, almost 50%! ^^

Ena Japan 2013 8

This, my dear friends, is one of my favourite food in Japan. It’s sold in the convenient store and you pick out what you want and place them in the containers provided, pour a little soup in and pay up. I bought the sausage and vermicelli  and they were AWESOME. Super tasty! ^^v

Ena Japan 2013 9

We were told that Tokyo Tower was a 10 min walk away, so the Lasalle group decided to take a walk out together! We came across a subway station and decided to take a look and “recee” for our last night when we get back to Tokyo. 😛

Ena Japan 2013 10

We made our way back to the convenient shops again! Check out the cup noodles from the land of Nissin! 🙂 Totally reminded me of my JC PW (for the uninitiated, stands for Junior College Project Work) where my group mates and I researched and presented on Momofuku Ando, the founder of Nissin cup noodles!

Ena Japan 2013 11

My supper for the night! Tasty sweet courn noodles with dessert!

Day 2~!

Ena Japan 2013 41

My outfit for day 2~

Ena Japan 2013 14

Even the dogs in Tokyo are cute!

Ena Japan 2013 15

This photo commemorates our Lasalle hero, Alex who wore shorts out in the cool weather of below 15 degrees. *thumbs up* 😛

Ena Japan 2013 16

Our resident cutie Desmond, with his ice cream and Alex photo bombing. HAHA.

Ena Japan 2013 17

Billboard along the streets of real life Japanese criminal hunt list. :O It’s scary!

Ena Japan 2013 18

The use of order, pattern and symmetry is found practically everywhere on the streets of Japan.

Ena Japan 2013 19

Even the office workers smoke in an orderly fashion!

Ena Japan 2013 20

The flowers along the roads are happy. ^^

Ena Japan 2013 21

The waterworks covers are too cute! This one’s self explanatory, is for fire hydrant hoses in case of fire.

We had to attend a talk back in the hotel on Earthquakes in Japan, but I won’t be going into details about that. 😛

Ena Japan 2013 22

Our sushi packed lunch, rice and egg and seaweed.

Ena Japan 2013 25

After lunch on day 2, we had some free time so we took a walk around the hotel and we discovered this! The REAL Yakiniku (Japanese barbeque) which we often see in Singaporean malls!

Ena Japan 2013 26

Our brave tutor/supervisor/”SUPER leader” Ginette took the first plunge. HAHA. AND boy it was GOOD. 😀 So we all took turns to buy one stick and shared with each other. ^^

Ena Japan 2013 24

Here’s a random shot of Ying all happy and cute. ^^

Ena Japan 2013 23

Look, Ma! Penang restaurant in Japan! 😛

Ena Japan 2013 42

My buys of the day from convenient store shopping. HEH. Coffee, gums and sugarrr.

After attending the afternoon talk, we packed up and moved out on coach for our next destination for the next few days!

Ena Japan 2013 44

We stopped at a pit stop during the coach ride and LOOK WHAT I FOUND. A basket of cuties!!!

Ena Japan 2013 27

I simply couldn’t resist. So I brought one with me. ^^ It costs about S$6. And it has beans in the tummy! It’s happily on my desk now.

Ena Japan 2013 28

We arrived! At Hotel Omoide Roman-kan, Daigo Town, Ibaraki Prefecture! It’s a Japanese traditional type of hotel stay.

Ena Japan 2013 30

This is how the room looked like when we first got our bags in and trying to get them sorted~.

Ena Japan 2013 31

The balcony area.

Ena Japan 2013 29

The toilet area.

Ena Japan 2013 40

And I realize in Japan, the exit is called “非常 阶段“ which when translated it means “not the usual steps” cool huh! 🙂

In case you were wondering, I can read and understand chinese characters and traditional Japanese characters use chinese characters. 🙂

Ena Japan 2013 34

We quickly got things sorted and went down for dinner! 😀

Ena Japan 2013 37

LOOK AT THE SPREAD YO. This one’s dessert cakes and the super yummy greek style yogurt in the steel bowl! ^^v

Ena Japan 2013 36

Tomato pasta!!!

Ena Japan 2013 35

Super yummy Japanese tempura (fried) sticks! An assorted choices of fishes and vegetables with the descriptions, if you can read, on the end of the sticks! <3

Ena Japan 2013 38

Along the walkway you’ll find many pressed floral art like this! So pretty! 🙂

Ena Japan 2013 39

When we got back to our room… IT WAS TRANSFORMED! 😀

Ena Japan 2013 32

Ena Japan 2013 33

We decided to try the tidbit offered in the room! It was complimentary. this one’s plum flavored soft pastry. Super nice, I bought 2 boxes back home before we left. 🙂

That’s all for today! Come back soon for my next update!

<3,

Ena

Fashion Food Fun Ena’s Hong Kong Day 2

Hello~

Today I’m back with HK Day 2 round of photos. I’ve decided I won’t be editing them into a scrapbook format because that’s taking up too much time and I have too many photos to update hahaha. ^^v

Here we go~!

Ena HK2 1

Selcas with bestie Bini early in the morn’

Ena HK2 3

One-shot at the floor lobby~

Ena HK2 4

One more infront of an art gallery opposite our hotel. 🙂

Ena HK2 9

I love how weirdly colourful put-together advertising bills are on the streets… Peculiarly making up a certain kind of HK design aesthetics!

Ena HK2 2

With lovely Sharlene, while we were travelin’

Ena HK2 10

This was en route to Shim Sha Tsui (unsure if I spelt it right) to the fabric market! The HKers seem to keep their floor cleanin’ a very formal affair! 🙂

Ena HK2 11

We came across this building… that looked like it has a mask of pins and needles.

And we met a super cute puppy while passing by a convenient store!

Ena HK2 12 Puppy

Ena HK2 12 Puppy2

The owner gladly posed for a pic with the cute puppy. Ok maybe it’s not a puppy but an adorable grown up cute dog.

Ena HK2 13

And our three crazy Indonesian representatives in their highly expressive poses! ^^ Kekeke. L-R: Sifra, Shella and Sharlene.

Now for photos of HK’s fabric market, where there’s rows and rows on end of fabric samples free for buyers’ a taking home to consider and deliberate to make calls back for orders! Most of them ship internationally!

Ena HK2 14

Ena HK2 15 Fabric Market

I love tweed fabrics. They come in many colours!

Ena HK2 17 Fabric Market2

One last shot of a typical HK fabric market street. 🙂

Then my tutors brought a few of us to visit Hong Kong Poly Uni, before that we had lunch!

This was at Misocool at a mall conveniently located right at the exit of a train station. I forgot which station now. Oops!
Ena HK2 18 Lunch Misocool Ena HK2 18 Lunch Misocool2 I can’t be sure if I was really hungry or this was really good cause I MEGA LOVED THIS MEAL. If I didn’t remember wrongly, it’s tomato beef soup with salmon flavored rice. It is so awesome I am salivating just as I  am typing this. :'( Anyway you can eat the rice alone or together with the tomato soup! The rice is cooked/baked to be a little crispy on the outside, very awesome!

Then we made our way to HKPU, it’s one of the top University in HK.

Then we visit more laboratories filled with industry standard machineries. These ones are fabric weaving machines… While we don’t have technical courses in Singapore, HKPU offers technical courses for their students so when they graduate, they would be working in fabric or garment making factories. Ena HK2 19 HKPU 13 Ena HK2 19 HKPU 14

Following the tour, we ended with a 3D, yes 3D I kid you not, show reel of their latest fashion graduate’s show case. It was honestly the most outstanding and jaw dropping fashion showcase I have ever seen, not so much for the design but the presentation of it. Not that the designs were not spectacular, but the presentation blew me away.

Ok, now that I came back from London recently, and I did not take pics with London Telephone booth, this photo is proving a little funny. Anyway, the reason we find a lot of Britain inspired aspects in HK is because HK was colonized by the British until their unity with China back in 1997, so HK feels very much like an extension of Britain, albeit in a chinese populated place.

For dinner, we all arrived at Chilli Fagara, touted to be one of HK’s best spicy boutique restaurants.

Address: Shop E, No. 45-53, Graham Street

Take note that it is near the Soho area, as there is another Graham street near Central HK.

Let’s begin with Hong Kong!

Hello hello~!

It’s been almost a month since I last posted. 😛

So before the days pass to months and months pass to years, I’d better upload my travel photos from HK before they become stale! 😛

Together with 2 tutors and 9 other classmates from Lasalle, we went to Hong Kong (HK) for a 4 Days 3 Nights fashion exposure trip, to see their fashion stores, school and design studios.

For this HK trip, I decided to design a Travel Photo Album in vintage style because the photos are almost becoming vintage since I’m taking so long to post them 😛 and also because there’s a part of the old HK that evokes romantic vintage vibes. 😉

Personally I’m not a fan of vintage fashion or design but vintage design is a very rich style, with many fans and resource available online so I had a lot of fun in designing and putting together this album. I hope you will enjoy it! And if you want to know where I got the free design elements from, you may find them at the end of this post. Also, I’ve saved photoshop (PSD) templates of all my pages, so when I’ve figured how to upload them online, I’ll also post it up so it’s free for download and people can edit for their own trips! Cool huh? ^^

Without further ado, here are my photos from HK Day 1~!

How did you find this album? Post your comments below! ^^

That’s all for now, I hope to be able to bring the next installment next week! For the record, there’s 3 more days for HK and 10 for Japan. These 15 pages took me a whole day to edit… So wish me luck! 😛

Ena Thanksgiving 2012

On the 2nd last day of the year, I’d like to recount a few things that I’m thankful to God for. 🙂

In chronological order followed by special people in my life.

Starting in January, I had a very enjoyable short stay at Avilion Cove hotel at Port Dickson, Malaysia with my sisters. You can read about the relaxing stay here.:)

Singapore’s Latest Art Haunt – Gillman Barracks Opening Night

Hi lovelies!

A few weeks back, Gillman Barracks had its opening night and as part of the Transmission Lab 2012 apprenticeship programme, we were invited down for the event.

My friend and fellow Trans Lab apprentice, Wanqi designed the typography for Gillman Barrack’s identity! (: We also attended the event together because we were the only ones who could make it. The rest either had stuff on or had to OT. ):

For the unknowing, here’s information about Gillman Barracks from their website so you have a better idea of what it’s all about:

Gillman Barracks (GB) is Asia’s up-and-coming destination for contemporary art. It will be distinguished as a vibrant centre in Asia for the creation, exhibition and discussion of contemporary art.

Named after British general Sir Webb Gillman, GB is set amid lush greenery and was once a stronghold to the First Battalion of the Middlesex Regiment. The conserved colonial barracks now houses galleries and creative businesses, as well as the Centre for Contemporary Art (CCA) that will open in 2013.

The international galleries features diverse and ever-changing contemporary art exhibitions, while the CCA will bolster the region’s visual arts landscape through its international artist residency, research and exhibition programmes. By fostering cultural exchange and creation, showcasing the best and most innovative art of our times, as well as generate discourse and research, the CCA will establish Singapore as an important centre for contemporary art in Asia.

And from Artinfo (which is probably from GB’s press release):

Part of the vision to make Singapore a “global city,” the new art enclave is a 15-minute drive from the central business district and is housed in refurbished buildings nestled amid lush greenery that were formerly military barracks and date from the 1930s. The entire development, which cost a little under S$10 million, will ultimately provide about 4,200 sqm for art galleries when completed, along with another 4,800 sqm of space dedicated to arts-related activities, such as artist studios, an art research center and food and beverage outlets. It officially opens with the first 13 galleries pulling out all the stops with their opening shows. Two more galleries will open next year.

Frankly, GB is a huge undertaking that was planned for years but executed in months. We are all pretty amazed and awed by what we saw that night and I truly hope that this major undertaking will continue to take flight in the hands of CCA when it opens in 2013.

Side tracking a little, I must confess that I have not assumed a blogger personality that I would prepare pro/semi-pro camera (I do have a handheld canon ixus my sister gifted me) for outdoor events. Which explains poor quality and or lack of photos. I try to, and sometimes I bring the camera out but I usually just end up snapping on the go with my trusty iPhone. It’s so much more convenient plus I can just Instagram / tweet / facebook when I want to! Many friends have commented that my iPhone has better camera quality, which I don’t deny. I am blessed. ^^

You know what? The next best invention would be a handy, lightweight camera with awesome visuals, built in filter, cute deco AND Instagram, Twitter, Facebook publishing function. Who wants to build and create this camera with me?! I won’t ask for much, just 1 camera for my own blog, 9 more for giveaways on this blog and perhaps a negotiable % life-long royalty for consultancy fees. 😉

OK SO. Enough of side-tracking. Back to topic, I must admit I didn’t go through all 13 galleries at the Gillman Barracks opening, and so that means that I should go back another time to check out the ones I’ve missed.

Nonetheless, I think I have visited about half of them, and here are some of my favourite galleries and artworks!

PARTNERS & MUCCIACCIA

Partners & Mucciaccia opens in Singapore with a bang, to an exhibition titled “From Picasso to the New Roman School”. This exhibition winds along the masterpieces of some of the greatest contemporary artists of the XX (read: 20th) Century – featuring the works of artists including Picasso, Lucio Fontana, Cristiano Pintaldi and many more acclaimed Italian artists (feel free to google them yourself ^^).

I am in love with the gallery. It’s filled with all these fascinating, contemporary artworks. I love contemporary fashion, art, news, basically most contemporary stuff. But what’s really cool about this gallery is that it has all these artworks dating decades back in the 60s but they are still avant garde and contemporary. Specifically I refer to the slashed canvases by Lucio Fontana.

This is NOT the one at the gallery. But it’s very similar. 4 strokes but in slightly different places. The one we saw at the gallery is titled

Lucio Fontana
Spatial Concept, Waiting
1968
Water based paint on canvas
81×65 cm

I mean check that out! It’s created in the late 60’s some almost 50 years ago and it still conveys the same angst humans experience today. Angst whether historical or contemporary is still angst. Contemporary art created decades ago people!

There’s an attempt of explanation in the guide I picked up at the gallery, let’s see if it makes any sense:

Another limit surpassed by the informal painting is the idea of space in painting. Lucio Fontana explored the possibility of giving the third dimension by cutting the surfaces of his works. The space is “here”, where we are, and it is “there”; the work becomes a stargate, an open passage towards the beauty conceived as waiting for the unknown. The achievements of this pioneer of contemporary art are represented by this works Spatial Concept, Waiting (1960s).

What do you think? Obviously after reading the above explanation, mine’s completely refuted. But it still makes sense isnt’ it? HAHA. Which explanation do you prefer?

Cristiano Pintaldi
Blond Girl
2012

Who shapes our perception of reality and how? Pintaldi’s work questions the misleading “truth” conveyed by the systems of power through mass media. The artist’s paintings reproduce the same tripartite decomposition of TV and computer monitor. When viewed up close, it’s made up of small pellets / blocks of overlapping colours that come together when viewed from afar, simply fascinating.

Check out a teaser video I found on youtube, for his exhibition presented at Venice Biennale last year 2011. (Side track, VENICE BIENNALE!!! It’s like the mecca of all contemporary artists. I often daydream, as in seriously I do, of going back for Venice Biennale. Was there on an school art trip while I was studying art in SAJC  in 2007 and it was A-MA-ZING. I hope and plan to make it for 2013. Oh yes I must.)

Pablo Picasso
The Artist and his Model
1964
Oil on Canvas
97x130cm

Unfortunately, I cannot find the photo online. It’s not a spectacular piece coming from Picasso, as in I’m guessing it’s probably one of the less known / work in progress piece. But it’s a masterpiece nonetheless. Like how many people on earth can attest that they’ve seen a Picasso masterpiece in real life?

If you are wondering why Pablo Picasso is so famous, it’s because he has been widely known for co-founding the Cubist movement with  Georges Braque. He is one (out of a grand total of 53) of the major world artists which I studied for A levels. Quite unfortunately I have returned my knowledge to the books and can’t recall what I’ve read/memorized of him. Nonetheless, blogging about this exhibition is a great opportunity to refresh my memory of this great artist and his work. Arguably, Picasso’s most famous work is Guernica – his depiction of the German bombing of Guernica during the Spanish Civil War. It’s choke-ful of symbolisms which we as art students had to read, understand, analyze and critique. It’s a powerful painting and statement for speaking against the cruelty of war and bombings. That, my friends, is perhaps the reason why Picasso is so famous because he was an intellectual that used his fame for a greater cause.

I am seriously side tracking a lot in this post, but I must say, war and bombings are so lame and retarded! At the heart of it all are selfish motivations (of egotistical leaders) that ruins lives. People, please never ever support war and bombings okay?!

MIZUMA GALLERY

CROSSING GAZES

Now – 18 Nov

Solo exhibition of the newest pieces in Korean artist Hyung Koo Kang’s series of overwhelmingly bigger-than-life portraits.

Hyung Koo Kang’s works are AMAZING, especially those that were created on metal. That’s right, you didn’t read wrong, METAL. He actually carved those fine hair lines you see on the above Monroe image out and mind you, these works are some 4m high! @-@ This is another case of you simply have to see it to believe and be astounded by. Seeing it on the photo, doesn’t do his work justice as all, it doesn’t look half as amazing as it is in real life. I just wish he had stronger subjects to work with than just merely famous people.

MICHAEL JANSSEN GALLERY

Epoxy Resin on canvas. Very pretty, decorative paintings. There was a book on display and his works have also been applied on the floor. Can totally imagine his work in hotel lobbies and applied to interior design.

BLENDED BY DESIRE & STEREOMONGREL

15 Sep – 29 Sep

Blended by Desire

Four young Indonesian artists — Mushowir Bing, Sanchia Hamidjaja, Ricky “babay” Janitra and POPO — from Jakarta will present video works, installations and wall paintings that reflect how contemporary urban society has been increasingly influenced by a pop culture globalized by technology and mass media. The artists, whose practices blend street art, cartoon and illustration, use the exhibition to articulate themselves amid the hustle and bustle of metropolitan life.

Their works are super cute lah!So relevant. “I hate tagging!”“I’m following you” is both a great news and kinda creepy. LOL.
Finally, I will end off this post with Singaporean artist Donna Ong, who used a yet unallocated gallery space in one of the old military barracks to create “And we dreamt we were birds.”
That’s all for now! Let me know which work is your favourite and why! Or you could also share about your favourite artist and artwork. 🙂

Philippines Trip 2012 | Beautiful People, Sweet Memories

Back in May, I went to Philippines, Illocos Norte, Laoag with my church pastor and friends to visit the churches we (our church) support there. It’s my second visit to the same area, I was there back in 2010. How time flies indeed and I am very thankful to God for the opportunity to go back again.

Here are snippets of the 1 week we spent in Philippines!

We went to a lady’s home where she cooked and fed about 100 children from 3 villages. The children are colouring pages of Noah’s Ark after we acted the story! (:

I was very impressed with this group’s colouring. It was very neat and artistic! The Filipinos are very talented in the arts like colouring and carvings.

Some of the children who were not colouring were busy playing. This kiddo here was playing with an old motorcycle helmet… Singaporean children would never be playing with a broken helmet because it’s dangerous but the children in Philippines can take anything and turn it into a toy. His coy smile is lovely isn’t it? (:This is our group of youths acting like ruffians! 😛 The tricycle is a very common mode of transport in Philippines. And it’s not uncommon to see 5 passengers squeezed in one!At another stop where we conducted children’s programme. Smiling sweet girls. This family/home had a mini zoo. There were pigs, chickens and goats… This is a new kid and it is adorable!Taking pictures on top a van… With pastor Wiliam and aunty Mei Yoke! It was a very interesting experience to be acquainted with our lunch and dinner dish while she was still alive… Introducing Spider-pig Hermione, whom we have christened affectionately. This is a picture of her struggling while butchers get her ready to board her last trip to the butchers…

Following pictures are quite bloody so please don’t be shocked!

.

.

.

This is Spider-pig Hermoine’s intestines…

This is everything else and her brain and blood in the blue tub. 😮

Sunday’s combined service children’s programme!

It seems that the boy on the left wasn’t very happy at my request for a picture… Sorry for interrupting your lunch boss!
This is Spider-pig Hermione on our dining table. 😛After the home and church visits we were looking forward to Jollybee, Philippine’s famous fast food restaurant. They specialized in chicken and spaghetti. After the meal we had to take a picture with Jollybee!
This is the picture of me and Jollybee two years ago! Seems like I lost some weight, haha!Of course I started a trend this time… 😛A picture of us girls, Sandy, Joey and I while we were at the hospital waiting to visit the pastor Mayolin’s new born baby and his wife.
It was quite a culture shock to realize how dated the Badoc hospital is… This is the newest and most modern looking area, the lobby reception/registration area.At the orphanage where I caught our tallest member, Ryan bullying a little boy in action! Haha! Kudos to the little boy who was a brave fighter till the end… 😛

Then we encountered our little hero who, in the midst of trying to get a shuttlecock down a tree, accidentally threw his slippers up the roof instead. 😛

I was very impressed by this agility and courage for climbing up the roof!

Then we watched the kids tossing an old can which was to determine who will be the catcher in a game of catching. A lot of ingenuity in kids!

On our last night we went to the seaside… 😀Us on the boat! 😀 One of the best boat ride in my life…

Where we basked in the glory of God’s creation, the skies in the setting sun.On the last day we visited a beautiful resort before setting off for the airport.

With my mentor and spiritual mother, aunty Lydia/Mei Yoke. And lovely girls, my “tummies” for the trip! (:And of course we were fascinated by a pregnant, white cow. 😛 That’s Ryan and pastor Redantor.

I am thankful to be able to travel and see the world outside of Singapore. Philippines is blessed with beautiful animals and land (forests, mountains, beaches), something that Singapore don’t have. It is our prayer that Philippines government will be stronger so that the people can have better jobs, education and lives and not just be dependent on exporting their people to work in other countries.

I hope I can go back to visit them again and plan for a longer stay to visit Boracay and Cebu! (:

xx
