Dejavu comes true for The Lion King

I’ll be catching The Lion King tonight and it’s gonna be a a deja vu experience come true for me!

Quite a while ago, I vividly remember dreaming about watching The Lion King musical in a setting that resembles the Sands Theatres at Marina Bay Sands, I remember the actors dressed up in animal like costumes running down the aisle to interact with the audience – it was all too real! So when I received the invitation to watch the musical a few weeks back, I remarked to my bestie that it’s a deja vu coming true for me!

I’m really excited about walking the red carpet and catching the Lion King grand premiere, touted as the World’s #1 musical with my bestie tonight! 🙂

The Lion King runs for a month starting from today until 26 August 2018, tickets start, from $65 get your tickets on Sistic website here!

A few of my favourites from Affordable Art Fair 2015

Hi Loves!

Back in November, I attended Affordable Art Fair 2015 with my gal pal Christabelle, just like we did last year. It’s held at F1 Pit building at Marina South.  This year there were 86 participating galleries from Singapore, Asia, Australia, America and Europe with works by 650 artists from all over the world. I have snapped a few of my favourite art works from Affordable Art Fair, sorry in advance if I don’t have the proper credit to the artists!

Singapore Fashion Week 2015 Recap

Hi loves!

Well you’ve probably seen my IG updates from months back when I attended a few shows from Singapore Fashion Week, mostly the young designers show, namely LASALLE Graduation show & Harpers Bazaar Next Gen show. Also attended the Star Creation & Zalora shows but did not manage to snap any nice photos so there’s none from those shows for this post~ 😛

While I definitely enjoyed both LASALLE Grad show and Harpers Bazaar Next Gen show – I find that LASALLE show designs focused more on artistic concepts & were more explorative, understandably as it’s an arts school (and my Alma mater, where I studied Fashion Media & Industries, majoring in Management), while Harpers’ show designs were a lot more “commercialized”, collections that look like they already belonged in the store. There’s no critical judgement from me either ways, as I would love to have pieces from select designers (you’ll know which from my comments/captions below, heh) from both shows in my wardrobe!

Alright, enough with my introductions~2015-05-14 08.54.51 2015-05-14 08.54.53 2015-05-14 08.54.55 2015-05-14 08.54.56Loving my make up for the day, hence the slew of selfies, heh. Am missing my hair from those days before I bleached it. Lol.
2015-05-14 09.37.58Getting ready to meet my inspiration, Miroslava Duma. In case you don’t know her, she was a fashion magazine editor, currently a street style icon and founder of buro247.com – which is now present in more than 7-8 countries featuring luxury fashion and lifestyle topics. She’s extremely well connected, business minded and savvy! While she still look like a teenager, she’s in her thirties and she has 2 kids! Don’t ask me how she does it!

2015-05-14 23.28.40Met up with Sifra my LASALLE school mate & Smita for the talk!
2015-05-14 10.25.37The emcee did such a bad job honestly. Her questions were so bad, some didn’t even make sense. It would have been much better if Duma and Dion Lee interviewed each other. It was such a waste that we did not get to hear more from the two of them as the questions were a waste of time/did not make sense.2015-05-14 23.35.44Nonetheless, with the little that was shared, it was inspiring to hear from Duma, who shared about having good work ethics – you’ve got to work for it, don’t expect things to drop down from the sky!
2015-05-14 11.13.26-2And got a pic with her!!! <3 Thanks to Smita! <3

2015-05-14 14.15.59Snapped a pic of this dude with this crazy and cool tiger head bag.

2015-05-15 21.10.02Headed to Chez Vous to get my hair done for Star Creation later in the evening. Belatedly realize that I should have gone for sleek back hair since I was wearing a rather edgy dress. Ohwells!
2015-05-14 22.25.20With cuties Q-li & Jem whom I met at SFW!

Day 2 of SFW, decided to have my hair done at the salon near my place before heading down!

And after it’s done, selfie taken on the cab! Decided to go for a very defined and red carpet-style hair and makeup look. Sleek hair back is actually no longer on trend since it’s been done 2-3 years back, but who cares as long as I like the look, heh!

A New Fashion Video Platform

Hello!

So today I’m blogging the third & last part of  my LASALLE takeaway series, ending off with my mid term research presentations, both the essay and the project.

StyleAsia

StyleAsia Teaser Video Cover

My final presentation’s on a business proposal for Asia’s first Fashion Video platform combining commerce and community. Imagine Youtube’s video platform, ASOS shopping site and WordPress or LinkedIn community. That’s what we’re talking about! I initially termed it StyleAsia. But for the final name it’s something else. I’m not posting about it yet or publishing it publicly… As I hope I can find a team or business to really create this platform, if God allows. 🙂

So what you’ll be seeing here today, for my essay research presentation, was my initial idea on the rise of blogging, vlogging and its impact on the fashion industry.

The business idea to create a bloggers management entity was later aborted because blogging is on a downwards trend. So I pivoted the idea to a video platform as video production and consumption is on an upwards trend. Cisco research says in 2013, 90% of internet traffic is driven by video content! Yeah baby!

So here are the works I’ve done for my final year’s mid terms!:

What is Fashion Marketing & Management?

Giorgio Armani

Giorgio Armani, the man touted to be both a brilliant designer & businessman.

For the last 3 years I’ve been studying Fashion Marketing and Management in LASALLE College of the Arts, under the degree title BA(Hons) Fashion Media & Industries.

When people ask me about what I study and I reply “Fashion Management (sometimes adding & Marketing)”.

They will almost always react with a “Wow! ?!”

And followed by, “So what is that?” or “What exactly do you study?”

Well, so my blog post today is to answer and clarify what Fashion Management and Marketing Studies is exactly! This way, you also have a better idea of what I have been doing for the last 3 years and where my skills, knowledge and specialization lies. 🙂

Usually I will answer in a nutshell that Fashion Management & Marketing is the basically Business Marketing studies but specific to the Fashion industry and we also study Fashion theories, history, trends, creative direction and graphic design.

But to be more specific, the modules I have taken in the last three years include:

Marketing,
Advertising,
Cultural and Contextual Studies in Fashion (Fashion theories, history, academic research and writing),
Branding,
Integrated Marketing Communications,
Visualization and Presentation (both digital and traditional, i.e. drawing by hand, softwares like Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign),
Finance (Budgeting, Financial Proposals)
Visual Merchandising,
Entrepreneurship,
Project Management,
Product Development,
Fashion Retail,
International Fashion Marketing
& Studio for putting our soft skills & knowledge into practical proposals such as Concept stores and Brands.

It is tough to define what Fashion Management and Marketing is exactly, but I have googled and found two pretty decent answers:

Fashion management is the promotion of apparel sales and involves all of the tasks necessary to deliver the clothing requests and meet the needs of potential customers and designers. Developing campaigns, displays and advertisements, directing manufacturing and marketing, and creating sales strategies are the various parts of Fashion management. Credits here.

Fashion marketing is much the same as product marketing. Integrating brand into the product is something always popular in the fashion world for many popular retail fashion wares. Basically fashion marketing is marketing to either fashion conscious consumers or to distribution channels such as retail franchises and so forth. Credits here.

So you may ask, why did I decide to study something as specific as Fashion Marketing and Management?

The reasons are simple, I love Fashion and I discovered after JC (Junior College) that I was more interested in the Business of Fashion rather than design. Also I really love branding, design and marketing. Also back then, after JC, I thought I wanted to be a Fashion Buyer. But over the last four years I have changed my mind.

I am not exactly sure yet what I am going to do or be in the near and distant future, if it will be directly related to Fashion or not, but I am quite sure that the skills and knowledge that I have picked up over the last 3 years will still be relevant wherever I may be.

You may also ask, so what are the Career prospects of Fashion Marketing and Management studies?

The typical ones will be, but not limited to:

Retail Manager
Stylist
Visual Merchandiser
Fashion Buyer
Public Relations Manager
Human Resource Manager
Production Manager
Fashion Journalist
Entrepreneur of Fashion Brand/Label/Marketing firm/Fashion related business

So now that you have a better idea of what Fashion Management and Marketing is, you might wanna check out the works I’ve done in Year 2, from August 2011-April 2012:

Ena’s LASALLE Takeaways Part 1 | 4 Useful Tips for Your Future!

Ena Lasalle

Hi! I’m beginning a series of Ena’s LASALLE Takeaways. Having studied Fashion Media and Industries BA(Hons) degree course, Management specialism in the past 3 years, I have accumulated quite a fair bit fashion knowledge and life experiences which I’d like to share.

For this first installment, I’m re-posting a FB status I posted back in March 10, 2013 when I was in the middle of my final semester of my degree studies and academic life:

Today I met up with a junior (from Lasalle) who wanted to know more about the course I’m taking, so that she can know better whether to go into the communication or marketing & management specialism.

I spoke at length with her but I thought I’d summarize and share a few things that hold true for myself, which hopefully will be helpful to those who are deciding what course to study in the future.

1. Take time to look within yourself, reflect and discover who you are. What do you do and why do you do it, your passions, your interests, your dislikes, etc. Knowing yourself, in my opinion, is far more valuable than others’ perception of yourself.

2. We become good at what we are passionate about. Therefore, study and take up a course that interests you, and not take up a course because it will lead you to a job. Because passion will drive you to desire to excel in your course of study and it is when you excel in your course of study that people; your peers, tutors and your future employees will pay attention to you and thus securing your job.

In the unfortunate scenario where your passion dies after you enter your course of study, then apply the motto “Do what you love, if not, love what you do.” Passion may die but the pride we take in our work must never.

3. Specialism, being excellent in one thing, is higher valued than being average in many things. Ironically the industry calls for institutions to give students an “all/well-rounded” education but eventually give the jobs to individuals who are spectacular at that one thing. Accountants may suck at writing and writers, at counting. You get what I mean. Therefore, identify your strength and work crazy hard at it. Know your weakness and don’t worry if you can’t fix them, know that you will find others who can complement your skill set. But if you don’t have an outstanding strength, then you will just blend in with everyone else.

4. Less is more. Whether it’s presentation slides, CPJ (Creative Process Journal), a speech or a piece of design, less is more. Let’s face it, teachers are busy, they don’t have the time to read every single scribble on our journals. A single big image and a sentence makes more impact than 9 images an a paragraph. Design. Design adds value to your content. Be intentional about everything you produce. Does that additional image add value your work? If it doesn’t, you know what to do.

I’ll also be publishing links to some of the essays, documents and slides which I have worked on during the last three years, beginning with year 1 for this post! So you can expect year 2 works in the second part, and year 3 works in the last installment. Some of the works are Group work, which have all been duly credited with my group members names. 🙂

I’m quite excited to be posting my works from school online because school’s been a HUGE part of my life for the last 3 years and in doing so, you guys and gals will be able to see what I’ve been doing, outside of this blog. 🙂

Also I’ll be glad to answer any queries for all past, present and future fashion students and lovers. So just feel free to ask away!

Transmission Lab | Kaleidoscope 2012

I am very happy to blog about Transmission Lab Kaleidoscope 2012. It’s been a year of meetings, ideas, discussion and hard work to bring together a successful art exhibition!

The journey wasn’t easy and it gave me lots of worry to say the least, but I’m glad to have been through this experience!

The opening was held on 11 May, 2012, Friday at our mentors’, Phunk new studio at Tanjong Pagar.

Here’s a short write up about the short fashion video I worked on with my collaborators, Gilda Su and Nicole Lee, as well as our profiles:

The video was filmed at Rochester Park, where colonial style buildings blend seamlessly with the greenery.
A lighthearted video that inspires Love & Daydream.
There will be time for dancing…
& there will be time for daydreaming…
Featuring fashion designs from Rêvasseur by Gilda Su.
We can’t wait to present the film! See you at the exhibition!

Teo Jia En + Gilda Su + Nicole Lee

Title: Love & Daydream Medium: Video

This video is inspired by the daydreamers and the artwork aims to bring “fun” back into fashion, to encourage its wearers to experiment and to make a statement with a personal style that is uniquely theirs. Keeping in line with the exhibition’s theme Kaleidoscope, we would like this work to encourage the viewers to be free to express themselves creatively through their dressing.

Apprentice: Teo Jia En (Creative Direction)
Teo Jia En is currently a Fashion Management student in Lasalle. Having cultivated an interest in the arts since young, she continued with art studies for ‘O’ & ‘A’ level and decided to pursue fashion studies. With a deep appreciation of the arts and cultures found in fashion, she aspires to be a leading trend maker in the fashion and luxury industry.

Collaborating artist: Gilda Su (Fashion Designer and Make Up Direction)
Gilda Su was born in Singapore and attended Bunka Fashion College. After graduating with a specialist degree in dress-making, she continued her studies at Parsons the New School of Design in New York City. Gilda is a full-time daydreamer and joyseeker. Her designs reflect her love for color and patternmanipulation, a playfulness that comes with self-confidence and an original personal style.

Collaborating artist: Nicole Lee (Videographer, Lighting, Editing)
A jack of many trades, Nicole Lee aspires to be a master in photography and videography. Nicole’s passion started with music, shooting at concerts and club events. While she has expanded into other aspects of photography, Nicole hopes to continue with this mantra of capturing the essence of moments on image. The journey hasn’t been easy, but she is very grateful for everyone who has helped, inspired and taught her.

Onward Japanese Fashion Show | ICB, DipDrops & Rosebullet

Thanks to HEAT Branding, through a competition held on Insing.com , I won tickets to visit Onward Kashiyama Fall/Winter 2011 Fashion Showcase @ Avalon. The original price of the ticket which includes access and one drink was $35 and I won tickets for a guest and myself! There were many Japanese that paid to watch the show that night, I am so blessed! 🙂

If you read my last article, you would know that I invited Gilda of Revasseur to attend the show with me.

That night, Onward Kashiyama Japanese fashion house introduced three retail concepts in a high-energy creative presentation. Invited guests and media were shown a premier showcase of the ICB, Rosebullet and DipDrops Autumn/Winter collections. 😀

I’ll let the photos do the talking~ Credits to Gilda for the sharp images and no credits to me for the blurry ones. 😛

ICB features grown up, office lady looks.

Before DipDrops came on, there was a live hair show by Shunji Matsuo featuring Malaysian blogger Cheesie of Cheeserland as model! 😀

Second in line, DipDrops FW 2011 collection had a distinctive British influence to it.

Lastly, Rosebullet showed a mixed collection of urban and laidback country floral styles. Before the models came strutting in, there seemed like a group of ‘normal’ girls prancing on the stage and then they settled in a corner of the stage, drinking champagne. We had no idea who they were and what they were doing but they did bring some entertainment. Perhaps Rosebullet was trying to convey that the ‘everyday’ girl can look equally charming, cute and attractive as the professional models. 🙂

To end off, a cute albeit blurry photo taken with Gilda and Kenneth and Andrew, designers of Depression! 🙂

They gave out really nice canvas tote bag with vouchers as door gifts! Sorry I won’t be posting photos of them cause I gave the vouchers away! 🙂 If you fancy the clothes, do visit Dip Drops at 313@Somerset (#03-09/10) or at the Rosebullet boutique located at Marina Bay Sands (B2-116, Canal Level)! 😉

Can’t get enough? Check out FeverAvenue’s more thorough coverage of the show here. 😉
School’s out and internship’s (sadly not holiday :/) in! I received positive news last Friday that I was given an internship placement with French Chambre of Commerce Singapore (FCCS). I am glad and I hope to put my limited French to good use and pick up a lot more in my 2 months there!
Blogging really takes time, hopefully I will be able to keep up and have more interesting stuff to blog about! 😛 I have so many stuff to blog about… My recent occupation with end of year’s presentations and submissions have resulted in blogging ‘back log’ :/ For a long ‘preview’, next up will be the 100 Friends Exhibition and I will combine that with a night out with Jacq and Char where we went for a very uneventful magazine bash but followed by a very interesting beer celebration… Next next will probably be a short one on my first halloween ‘party’ experience! 😉
That’s all for now, wishing all of you the best of health and a blessed week ahead! <3

Into the swirling memory bowl – Mid Oct 2011

Bonsoir!

Just some quick updates about my personal life, which I have not done so for quite some time now, as I have been mostly updating on the fashionable events I’ve attend.

I am very thankful to God for completing and successfully submitting Finance assessment paper this morning. Am actually suffering from the fatigue of staying up late and waking up early to complete the assignment due to bad time management and ill-discipline from being distracted by internet (sigh)…

I have just completed 2 months worth of french elementary 1 course, held every tuesday and thursday nights! In a quick recap, I am now able to pronounce in french A-Z, 1-100, introduce myself, mastered a limited but increasing list of vocabulary such as countries, occupations and subjects. I am struggling with remembering feminine prefix – la and masculine prefix – le. I hope to be more acquainted with the french culture to inspire and motivate my learning. I also hope that I will soon be able to speak and think comfortably in french! A faraway dream as of now, but definitely a great ambition!

School work is piling up like a huge mountain as submissions and presentations are all nearing. Scheduling really helps put things in perspective and helps with prioritization. Was initially quite worried last weekend about not being to finish work but after scheduling, there was actually sufficient time. But turns out, our tutors have postponed 1 submission and 1 presentation. I feel sad that our misery is prolonged (not actually sure if we will put in more effort, but now there is no reason not to do better.) but on the bright side, I am relieved and should be happy for the extra time to do things even better, more time for details. 😉

Time is really flying by like crazy all of a sudden. It’s October and soon the year will be over. @-@ I am grateful because I’ve been superbly (and happy to be) busy with many activities with friends and communities. Other than school, church, attending events with lovely friends and learning French, I am also involved with Transmission Lab 2011-2012 hosted by Phunk Studio.

A week ago I attended a fashion show showcasing Japanese brands Rosebullet, ICB by Onward fashion group. I won the tickets and I asked Gilda, fashion designer and genius behind the homegrown(but with American design background and Japanese quirky sensibilities) label Revasseur to attend with me. I will do a proper introduction about Gilda and Revasseur in a future post. I am super happy and honoured that she agreed to collaborate with me to create an artwork under Trans. Lab program. I am very excited to discuss more with her about our collaboration once school’s out. 🙂

And last night saw the opening of 100 Friends 100 Artists 100 Inspiration exhibition held at TCC @ Clarke Quay (near Raffles Place Mrt). The exhibition is managed by Art-management. It’s a celebration of Phunk Studio as they invite 100 friends to create 100 artworks – each piece representing something, someone that inspires them. Subject varies from animals to families, lovers, artists and for myself, a Singaporean fashion visionary Tjin Lee. 🙂

Each artwork will be sold at $199 per piece. $99 will go to funding Transmission Lab 2012 exhibition which will be held next February, showcasing the artworks of up and coming creative Singapore talents (including Gilda and myself). I am beyond honoured and often catch myself smiling silly (and feeling inadequate) to know that I am in such talented company. I am very humbled and I do hope to make a positive contribution and positive impact to the local arts and design community. 🙂

As this is a short recap, I will update more photos for Onward fashion show and 100 Friends exhibition another time, soon. So look out for updates. 😉

Lastly I am going for my first internship interview tomorrow and I really hope all things go well and that I get the position. Will update more about it if I get it. *Excited*

Au Revoir~!
