Picnic by the Bay

If you haven’t, hopefully you will set out for a picnic by the bay after this post!

It was quite a spontaneous picnic gathering, organized just the day before. With a small group of church friends we decided to pot luck and head out for a day of fun at Esplanade by the bay! ๐Ÿ™‚

Sandwich, chicken sausages and soft drinks.

With Claire, Jerome, Ernest and Matthieu.

Posing against the beautiful skyline.

Like a Hollywood movie!

The scenic view… a tourist attraction.

Ernest thirsty for some water…

Matthieu’s fight against the Merlion. Hehe.

And Jerome wish to collect some home…

At the Esplanade library… The boys and their dance moves.

During the following Saturday, Benji cell decided to head to Aston’s at East Coast for dinner, instead of the usual Hawker fare. (:

Xue li and I with our respective meals.

Russ, Ming and Vivien.

Several more posts to come… Photos from my trip to Port Dickson, snippets of CNY, Museum visits and goofing around with girls in school.

I hope your year has been going great! (:

2011 in Review

Coming in two weeks late…

The WordPress.com stats helper monkeys prepared a 2011 annual report for this blog.

Here’s an excerpt:

A New York City subway train holds 1,200 people. This blog was viewed about 6,100 times in 2011. If it were a NYC subway train, it would take about 5 trips to carry that many people.

Click here to see the complete report.

I just wanna thank everyone who’s been reading and commenting on my blog! ๐Ÿ™‚

2011 has been a great year blog wise – I think I garnered more readers than I’ve ever had in all my previous blogging years combined. My blog has always been a personal blog with a focus on Fashion and it’ll continue to stay this way. ๐Ÿ™‚

In my personal spiritual life it’s also been a fruitful and encouraging year. I finally came out of a year long figurative hermit shell. And I really want to thank my sisters – Lu Jia, Jia Hui, my parents and my mentor Aunty Mei Yoke (although I think she probably won’t be reading this – for praying for and with me all through it. Needless to say, I truly thank God for always being there for me – even during times I did not want to recognize because it was painful to. This year… I want to go back to the first love I had for God. :’)

Socially speaking it has been rather surprising to have met wonderful new friends through my french class and my internship at CDL. I am thankful. Relationally… I think I have not been maintaining a lot of my friendships well because of our conflicting schedules and this is an area I would like to improve on in this new year. ๐Ÿ™‚

With Sofie (in blue) and friends.

With lovely Annabel. It’s pretty amazing how well we got along together during my CDL internship.:)

With Jacq and Char, friends of Annabel. This was the first of many a girls night out we had in 2011. ๐Ÿ™‚

Academically and career-path wise, I have learnt much through my three internships. I have learnt much in the fashion and real-estate industries respectively. There were mistakes I’ve made and which I am still learning from but God and my bosses and supervisors have been very merciful to say the least. I know I won’t want to settle for a 9-5 desk bound job and if you know what you want, why not go ahead and just do it? I think there is nothing worse than going to work at 9am on the first day of the year just waiting for 5pm of the day till your holiday starts again. Idealistic, I know, but I hope you and I both can pursue careers that are we are passionate for, challenged by and earns a profitable income from.

All glory to God! May our 2012 be brighter, better and bear more beautiful memories than before.

With love,

Jia En

My 2011 Christmas ;)

Hello ! Hope your January is starting out well… whether you are at school or at work!

I meant to post up photos from my Christmas celebration with my cell group but… I realize the pictures are not with me and it’s kind of late for it anyways. So.. just one cute shot of the really pretty and tasty cookies baked by Claire’s mum! ๐Ÿ˜‰

I had Christmas eve dinner with my sister, Claire and Xue li at Aston’s. ๐Ÿ˜‰

On the 30th Dec, (after my last day of internship!) I headed down to Singapore Recreational Club @ Padang to meet Jean – friend of Khai and Sofie. It was Sofie’s birthday party and Khai sweetly prepared a surprise party for her at the hotel. It was very smart of Khai to request Jean to decorate the room before hand. Haha. ๐Ÿ™‚

With the beautiful Sofie !

Sofie and her fiance, Khai. They are getting married coming November!

Stunning couple… ๐Ÿ˜‰

With Stacey and Sofie. With the girls – Jean, Stacey, Sofie and Cassey! The beautiful city skyscraper scene from SRC president’s hotel room.

It feels good to be back in school… But we were thrown a curve ball – a multi-specialism group project to be completed in 5 days! Having to juggle school, real estate night lessons, ย Transmission lab art exhibition video project and church commitments requires a lot of discipline and energy and somedays the stress gets to me.

But on the up side, God answered my prayer by giving me a very lovely group of project-mates and even though due to some unexpected circumstances some work was delayed, we are still carrying through this project with a positive spirit !!! ๐Ÿ˜€

Praying and wishing everyone all the best for the project!!! Wish me all the best and break a leg! Hahahaha. x)

Looking back at 2011 Part 1

Hi dear readers! HAPPY NEW YEAR 2012!

I hope you enjoyed your New Year’s weekend as much as I did! I went for my friend, Sofie’s birthday on 30th Dec which was a mega blast and I had a quiet New Year’s countdown with my family and celebrated the New Year with friends at Sunday morning church service! ๐Ÿ™‚ Spending time at our Lord’s house is a great way to start the New Year! ๐Ÿ™‚

This is gonna be a long post! Before I go on to the New Year blog posts, I’d like to wrap up my 2011 first. Heh. I really haven’t had the time to update all my pictures from December so that’s what I’ll do here! ๐Ÿ˜‰

Starting off with my friend H’s 21st!

Gosh, has it really been a full year of 21st birthdays? I think I might have possibly attended almost one every month! Partly glad our 21st year is over but also hoping we’ll all continue to meet up! ๐Ÿ™‚

That’s lovely Jing Wei and Valerie with the fantastic buffet spread. The party was held at Aranda chalets, which in my opinion is one of the best chalet offerings in Singapore for their sleek and stylish chalets with a quiet and lush environment.

Instead of having a traditional birthday cake, H celebrated with tiny cupcakes which were not only beyond adorable but also very delicious!

I thoroughly enjoyed the red velvet cupcake and the caramel cupcake!
And in the “Most Hilarious Post-Dinner Birthday Activity for the year 2011” award, H’s takes the cake. As seen from above, she was first “blind-folded” in a red plastic bag and made to whack the pink heel pinata with an umbrella. What went down instead, was a very crooked umbrella because the pinata was one hard nut to crack!
Next up… FCCS Team Christmas Lunch @ Au Petit Salut at Dempsey Road! ๐Ÿ™‚
The Christmas lunch was a much welcomed break and reward as we had worked very hard for the months of November and December, for various events and publications.
The lunch was a gathering of the permanent staff, interns, free-lance staff and our president. As you can see most of the team are French with only 3 other ladies who are local Singaporeans (and naturally with whom I bonded with). So my internship was also quite a cultural exposure for me, particularly in terms of language and food.
Group photos! Generally when I reveal to my peers where I intern at, they would respond with slight gasps and exclamations of how cool it is. Upon hindsight, it is indeed all glory to God that He secured a wonderful internship opportunity for me which i will look back with fondness. Despite the tedious work I did, I really enjoyed the friendships I have made with my colleagues. ๐Ÿ™‚
Last but not the least, here’s what went down my tummy during that meal. Fantastic french loaves and soft butter (which reminded me of the meals I had when I was in Italy in 2007), escargot in garlic sauce for starters, beef steak and fries for mains and ending off with raspberry sorbet and gateau (cake) ! ๐Ÿ™‚
With the other fellow intern, Nirina. He’s French but from Madagascar!
Soo… look out for Part 2 in the next post, I will post photos from Benjamin (my cell group) Christmas party and Sofie’s birthday party~!
Tata!

The Elephants Parade @ Tangs Orchard!

Merry Christmas dear readers!

I hope the Christmas season is treating you well! ๐Ÿ™‚

A bonus for working at Orchard, in addition to the good food around town is the fine sights on the streets. This year, Tangs have invited several brightly and creatively coloured elephants! Do go down to town to admire these cute elephants before they are gone! ๐Ÿ™‚

Angry bird is everywhere! Even an angry-phant! ๐Ÿ™‚

These two jeweled elephants front the Tangs entrance. Very cute. ๐Ÿ™‚

Bejeweled and champagne coloured elephants. They can be bought at a special pop up store in front and as well as on the fourth floor!

I thought this elephant looked queer with the black feathers… But still very glam I must say.

I love christmas decorations! Everything looks so happy and beautiful!

Gold butterflies adorn the decos in Tangs. Haha.

You can get a plain elephant and colour it in DIY style!

That’s all for now! I have a lottt of food photos from all the good food I have been having! ๐Ÿ™‚

Will post them soon! Meanwhile I’ll be off having more good food during the christmas season and I hope you will be too! ๐Ÿ™‚

Here’s a song we sang at my cell group party last night! Christmas isn’t Christmas till it happens in your heart! ๐Ÿ™‚

Christmas Isnโ€™t Christmas
โ€™till it happens in your heart,
Somewhere deep inside you
Is where Christmas really starts;

So give your heart to Jesus,
youโ€™ll discover when you do
That itโ€™s Christmas
Really Christmas for you.

Jesus brings warmth like a winter fire,
A light like a candleโ€™s glow;
Heโ€™s waiting now to come inside
As He did so long ago.

Jesus brings gifts of truth and life
And makes them bloom and grow.
So welcome Him with a song of joy
And when He comes youโ€™ll know โ€ฆ.. that โ€ฆ

Christmas Isnโ€™t Christmas
โ€™till it happens in your heart,
Somewhere deep inside you
Is where Christmas really starts;

So give your heart to Jesus,
youโ€™ll discover when you do
That itโ€™s Christmas
Really Christmas for you.

lyricsย & song: jimmy & carol owens

Merry Christmas! It is all about Jesus! ๐Ÿ™‚

Catching a Flu

A sneeze in the office

A wave of air

Carries the virus

Through the corridor

Above and across my colleagues

Straight to my desk

Or was it

A sneeze in the office

Early in the morning

A harmless conversation with the flu victim

When I caught the flu?

Then

Swelling of the eyes

Pain of the throat

Drowsy head

Sleepy thoughts…

All day all night

Now at the doc’s

Who can’t catch the flu and

Take it away

But to administer meds

That will fight those virus in me

Meanwhile…

Aching sleepy me

Cant wait to recover and be well again

Sponsored Review | CLEAR Shampoo Review featuring Martin Hong

UPDATED with review and pictures of hottie Martin Hong! ๐Ÿ™‚

Hi my dear reader! I have been busy and I hope all of you my lovely readers are doing well this week! ๐Ÿ™‚

CLEAR shampoo is famous and touted for its Anti-dandruff shampoo formula (hence the name Clear) thereforeย I am very happy to bring to you Martin and my reviews of CLEAR Shampoo – New breakthrough in scalp care Nutrim 10 range!

I will present my review in this post and Martin’s review will follow up in the next post! ๐Ÿ™‚

First up!

1. Clear Women Ice Cool Mentholย

Clear Women Ice Cool Mentholย shampoo is a refreshing and revitalizing shampoo. If you like to start and end off your day with a refreshing hair wash, this is what you are looking for! It is suitable for all scalp and hair types and it has an invigorating burst of menthol freshness. Personally I am not a fan of menthol as I find it is too masculine a scent for me. ๐Ÿ˜› But if you are a girl that loves her mint, I’d say go for it! ๐Ÿ™‚

Next up…

2. Clear Women Anti Hair-Fall

Clear Women Anti Hair-Fall shampoo is my preferred choice between the two! ๐Ÿ™‚ Created with Hair Lock Technology, it is suitable for weakened scalp and hair. The shampoo strengthens from the root to tip and increases hairโ€™s defense against hairfall* and breakage. What I love about this shampoo is that it actually smells and feels nourishing! During and after the wash, my hair feels cleansed, smoother and nourished. The scent is lovely and fantastic, I highly suggest test-smelling the product the next time you visit the supermarket. As girls, it is important for us to prevent hair fall so this is a fantastic product! ๐Ÿ™‚

Bothย shampoos retail at leading pharmacies and supermarkets atย an affordable price ofย $9.40 for 350ml and $14.30 for 700ml.

Now we continue on to the Men’s range!

My dear friend Martin is a CLEAR shampoo user, so he gladly accepted my request to review their products on my blog! ๐Ÿ™‚

Check out Martin in his usual coolness (I grabbed this pic off his facebook, hahaha).

Before you scroll down… You might want to check that your parents are not peeking over your back because otherwise they will start asking “Why are you looking at pictures of a top naked pretty boy washing his hair?” ๐Ÿ˜›

Martin’s Guide to a head of CLEAR cool hair!

This is the secret to my cool hair!

First you squeeze a generous amount on your hands…

Then you lather your hair… Now is the time you can style your hair to look like Beckham!

Massage the shampoo on your hair…

Wash it off and feel fresh~

Dry your hair well…

And this is how you will have great looking hair!

Martin’s review:ย What I like about CLEAR shampoo is that its effective (itโ€™s an anti-dandruff formula) and that it leaves this cooling menthol feeling on your scalp. Itโ€™s like rubbing ice cream all over your hair, its pretty awesome. And after you wash it off, you can still feel the minty-tingly sensation and it just makes you feel really fresh.

CLEAR shampoo has 2 ranges, one is โ€˜Cool Menthol Sportโ€™ and the other is โ€˜Anti-hair fallโ€™. Iโ€™m not old enough to need the second one lah, but the first one really works for me. So for anyone who likes an effective-fuss-free-awesome-feeling shampoo, this is the perfect product.

To end off…

CLEARย Shampooย Sampleย Redemption for my dear readers to try 7 different types of new CLEAR Shampoo with Nutrium 10. They are now up for redemption atย www.thesamplestore.sg.ย Hurry redeem your free samples before stock runs out! ๐Ÿ™‚

Ena Vlogs | of Awkward Turtles & Clear Shampoo

Hello!

I had my fringe trimmed! Nice? ๐Ÿ™‚

I decided to do a short vlog… so here it is!

Am asking around to find a willing guy friend to review the shampoo, hehe. Quite excited to write about the review post soon! I realize I do like to review products. So if you have any products you would like me to review, drop me an email! ๐Ÿ˜‰

I have two more posts coming up, ICB styling event from 2 weeks ago and my friend’s 21st birthday last week! I wanted to post them tonight but it’s quite late already so I’ll leave it for next time! ๐Ÿ˜› Time flies! It’s been one month since I started internship, I’m halfway through! I am really missing holidays though… increasingly I wish i was “en vacances” which means on holiday in french. Sighhh. Looking on the bright side, I do enjoy my work at the chamber because of my friendly colleagues although this week has been pretty stressful and hectic… with many deadlines and due dates.

I always try to remember stuff to blog/vlog about but when I do come down to it, I forget all of them! I really should jot ideas down… I am going to join my friend Sofie for her wedding decoration meeting tomorrow night! She is having a Marie Antoinette theme which is really cool! ๐Ÿ˜‰

My french class exam is in like 2 weeks time!!! Hahaha I need to start revision! It’s like so many grammar rules to remember! When I revise till the end, I forget what I learnt at the beginning! -_-

So! Drop me a comment and show me some love! (: <3 <3 <3

Foodie Galore & La Pรฉtanque!

Salut Les Amies! Hello my friends!

Thankfully I had a very enjoyable week and I hope you had too!
This will be a very image heavy post as I will basically just post a lot of pictures from last week! ^^

First up, I am going share photos from some of the meals I’ve had last week! As I am now interning at a company located at Liat Towers, next to Wheelock, I’ve had the good fortune of having my friendly colleagues bringing me around some of the good food places around town to eat! Don’t blame me if these photos make you hungry! ๐Ÿ˜›

First up, pepper beef rice lunch at Wisma’s Food Republic! It’s from the store that sells beef noodles. Very yummy, at $6.30 per set. ๐Ÿ™‚

As I have French classes every Tues and Thurs, I’ve taken to eating sandwiches for dinner due to the convenience. I highly recommend this ham and lettuce sandwich from Sun Moulin bakery at Shaw House’s Isetan. Priced at $3!

As my parents were away for the week, my sister and I decided to meet up for dinner and we had delicious Japanese food at a shop at Raffles City basement. I forgot to take note what is the store name. Lol. This tofu side dish is not very tasty…

But this Soft shell crab Okos is highly recommended especially if you like soft shell crab! ๐Ÿ™‚

This sandwich is from Taka’s Deck bakery… which has very tough bread but very yummy mayonnaise! I won’t buy it again cause the bread is too hard, but if you like hard bread then you can give this a try! It’s $3. ๐Ÿ™‚ย

My sister took pics of us on the train home and made this image compilation including my second sister! ๐Ÿ™‚

This are the stuff I bought from Watson’s member’s sale! Hahaha. Pads, LoveMore facial masks and Majorlica eyeliner all on like 50% offer! ^^ The LoveMore facial masks come in very pretty packaging like an airmail envelope, I will take a picture and upload soon. ๐Ÿ™‚

On Saturday, I went to Siloso beach to check out the La Petanque event organized by my colleagues at FCCS. ^^

It was a super beautiful and sunny day!

A pic with the lovely Cat.

Constance hard at work in the morning keeping scores!

With the event head, Valerie, dressed in the colours of France! ๐Ÿ™‚

I wanted to explain the Petanque rules here but I am quite lazy and wiki-pedia explains it quite clearly so I would just recommend you to read it here. As an introduction,ย Pรฉtanqueย (French pronunciation:ย [petษ‘ฬƒk]) is a form ofย boulesย where the goal is, while standing inside a starting circle with both feet on the ground, to throw hollow metal balls as close as possible to a small wooden ball called aย cochonnetย (literally “piglet”) or jack. It is also sometimes called aย bouchonย (literally “cork”) orย le petitย (“the small one”). The game is normally played on hard dirt or gravel, but can also be played on grass, sand or other surfaces.

Met my French class classmate, Yu Xin at the event and she was jumping in joy when she scored a point. ๐Ÿ™‚

Isabella a very humorous french lady looking good while throwing the petanque ball. ๐Ÿ˜‰

I did have a chance to represent FCCS and play the game but I don’t have photos to show! ๐Ÿ˜› It’s pretty easy and fun to play!ย

Lunch was at Rasa Sentosa’s Barnacles restaurant, French buffet style and it was oh-so-good! There was a wide variety of food available and unfortunately when I reach, the first round was gone and snatched up by hungry french men so I missed out a bit but still what i had, mini burgers, fish, cheese, and desserts like cream cuff and strawberry shortcake was awesome!

Met a really cute french boy, Augustine! He has really big eyes but when he smiles they become like slits, haha cute!

Next up, a vlog post followed by another post with photos from my classmate, Ser Li’s sexy 21st birthday party! ^^

My views on PM Lee’s National Day Rally Speech 2011

I am quite touched by the speech PM Lee gave during National Day Rally. To be honest, I caught the first few minutes on television but then got bored and decided to stop watching. But tonight my parents were talking about how Singaporeans have praised PM Lee for his good speech and so I went to check it out online. You can read it here.

Halfway through reading the speech, I was quite jaded and didn’t read anything new that I have not read before. The troubles we face; foreign migrants, housing and transport issues that gives rise to the people’s unhappiness. And how he reassures us that the various ministries are looking in to the issues and are doing their best to find solutions.

The speech only started to be interesting when he provided tangible solutions. Such as raising the income ceiling for HDB and EC to $10,000 and $12,000 respectively and increasing the number of BTO houses for the coming year to keep HDB “available and affordable” for all.

And pertaining to the people’s complaints about the lack of a degree education placing in Singapore, the government have responded by increasing the placements for locals to an additional of 2000 a year, which is supposedly a whole cohort for SMU. This is a good move, but alas a belated one. I can attest to the number of my friends who had to move on to a private university with exorbitant prices and they will have to bear the burden of their education debt for a good few longer years than those who could enjoy local university education. I weep for my friends, but yet I rejoice for the cohorts that will get to enjoy these new measures.

I believe the reason why Singaporeans are particularly touched and impressed with PM Lee’s speech is because he represents the government in showing genuine sincerity of implementing positive changes to our country after hearing (finally, I may add) our cries and as well reassuring us repeatedly that Singaporeans are priority and will be given priority in important matters such as housing, education and healthcare. It is not an easy task that the government has to undertake and though they may not have done the best of job in recent years and had a few slip ups here and there, they show genuine passion to do things even better now and onwards.

PM Lee ended the speech with many quotes and stories taken from inspirational Singaporeans and how they represent the Singapore spirit. Singaporeans that may come from a disadvantaged background but persists on and is rewarded by their hard-work.

From PM Lee’s NDR speech, I have come to realize that to be a good and admirable leader, one has to remind the people of the storms they have braved and made it through together and it is the same strong spirit that can bring them through the tough times ahead. The failures of the past are also there as a lesson for us to learn and to move on from. There is no point in blame shifting but to provide effective solutions with a positive attitude. And most of all, he is also to remind and inspire the people of their strength, the attitude, spirit and direction he wants them to move forward in.

I may have my fair share of complaints about the government sometimes (especially when suffering on public transport during peak hours!) and I still believe that the people must and should always be on the alert and give constructive and timely feedback to the government. But I am also very grateful to God and the various ministers and public servants that have toiled long and hard to keep our country, the clean, green and efficient city-state that I will always be (and hopefully increasingly) proud to call home. ๐Ÿ™‚

I <3 Singapore!

3 Important Things You’d Want to Know About Real Estate and Property

After a 2 month stint as a show flat marketing intern, here’s a post inspired by a friend who asked me what I’ve learnt from the internship. If I could choose 3 important things I think anyone should know especially about purchasing their first property or real estate locally, it would be these.

1. ย Investing in real estate and property is wise, especially in high-density cities.ย

In places like Singapore where there is an ever increasing population, the prices of real estate and property can only go one way, UP. So you know you’d want to invest in them when you have the $.

2. Buy a HDB (Housing Development Board) flat first.

Especially if you are eligible, i.e. you are a Singaporean citizen or a Permanent Resident because not only the government gives a $20,000 – $30,000 grant (“free” money!) to first time buyers, it is almost 100% guaranteed that the price of your HDB will increase when you sell it off after you’ve completed the MOP (Mandatory Occupation Period, which is currently set at 5 years, i think). So after 5 years of living in your HDB, you can sell it at a profit and move on to purchase a resale HDB, ideally a place that’s bigger and more convenient. Or, you can use the profit and purchase a condominium.

Make sure to purchase a HDB while you’re still earning less than $8,000 a month and do not own any private property or you won’t be eligible to buy one! There are other eligibility requirements to buying a HDB, like having a family nucleus, so you can only buy if you are married or have a fiance/fiancee. Singles can only buy after the age of 35.

3. Don’t be fooled by the showflat.ย

If you are looking to purchase a private condominium especially for the first time, do not be taken in by the show-flat. As a show-flat marketing intern for 2 months, I have come to know that the show-flat:

– Shows the biggest unit available. For example, for 3 bedroom, there can be the 1000sf and there can be the 900sf kind. The show-flat will always be the biggest unit available and if applicable, with the balcony or PES (private enclosed space) on ground floor. The PES will easily add about 80sf, and that’s a lot. The view you’ll see will also likely be the best, and not the bin-centre or substation. Never assume that what you see at the show-flat is what you’ll get.

– Will be adorned with the best interior decoration that can easily cost up to hundreds of thousand dollars. That includes mirrors in every room, to create the illusion of space when the actual floor size is small. The mirrors and most of the interior decorationย are usually not provided on purchase,ย hor. The interior decoration with the expensive linen and furnishing creates a very exclusive, beautiful and ideal home environment, all to induce you to buy it. So don’t be taken in by the superfluous beauty and be in for a “surprise” when you open the door to a smaller than expected, empty and plain unit after you collect your keys. Make sure you know just how big (read small) the unit along with the exact accompanying furnishing that you intend to purchase and not make assumptions based on the show-flat!

The key things you’d look out for before buying the property: floor size, location (whether it’s convenient for public transport, near good schools, shopping places, etc), view (not the bin centre or blocked by buildings or trees) and accompanying furnishing.

All in all, even if you’re super rich, purchasing a home or any property for that matter, is usually a major life decision and one that costs a huge chunk of your income/savings. So it will pay to be careful and to do your own research and homework. Don’t rely on the marketing agent to analyze the property for you. Make sure you know what you’re paying for. Read through the brochure carefully, especially those in fine print and prepare a list of questions you want to know and ask the property agent you’re attended by at the show flat.

These are the 3 important points I’ve learnt, hope you’ve learnt something new too!

Trigger Point

I posted on twitter recently:

I feel like, I have all these tears inside of me just waiting to erupt. But I would rather swallow my tears than acknowledge them.

And to that, I’d like to add, that it seems that I have a never-ending well of tears within me. I hate to be dramatic, but I’m not exaggerating.

I just ended a phone call with my friend, M. We belong to a group of friends that I used to be very tight with. But somehow, along the way, after a few missed group gatherings, I was no longer invited to the gatherings and “forgotten.” That was last year. It hurt me a great deal and I was quite upset. I’ve gotten over it quite some time ago, and the reason I called him was to ask/clarify if there was any tension or hard feelings anyone in the group had with me. He said no and I was explaining how I came to feel the way I do and that I wanted to know the truth, if there was any, now that I’m past caring. He apologized a few times, of which I told him not to feel sorry. He explained that things just happen, and just is, as with timing. But I guess the truth is that they just never cared too much about me, or at least not as much as I cared about them. The hurt still hurts and still stings. So I cried, I guess my pride just won’t let me admit that I still care. Still hope they’d care more about me. Ha!

Alright, I’ve packed my room, with a little more stuff to clear. Preparing for school which will start on Monday. Planning for check up with the dentist and eye doc, meet up with friends and clear readings before school starts! Yowza~

I think I can be read like an open book. That’s why I’ve grown to be introverted. Cause I’m not good at lying, I’d rather just shut-up, clamp up, than let it all out and cry, cause I hate to be the whining/crying/weak girl. I’m just too proud for that. And I think that all that’s happening is just proving that I need to head back to God. And that I need to stop thinking/feeling that what’s happening is preventing me from going back to him.

Xx

I’m 21!

Hello guys & girls! I’m officially legal! Not that there’s anything I’m dead eager to do with my officially legal age… To me, being 21 is just another number! In fact I think being 20 is a bigger milestone for me, or rather was a bigger milestone because at 20, I was no longer a “teen” ! LOL. Ok, now I’m an adult! And I’m not exactly looking forward to it cause it entails tons of responsibilities! *Shudders*

It’s actually really late now, so here’s just a preview of the photos from my pre-birthday party on Friday! I’ll upload the rest with captions another time soon! I think I’ll also be uploading photos of my Batam trip with friends although the photos aren’t glam but it was a pretty fun trip with the great and fun company! ๐Ÿ™‚

Here’s me with the cake my friends bought/surprised me with at TCC! ๐Ÿ™‚

With the awesome bunch of girls! We go way back from secondary school! How time flies!!!With the boys all looking cool in black & white! m/
And me posing with a hand drawing Yiting drew for me! ๐Ÿ˜‰ Btw I was wearing a bandana that was the party favour! Cool huh! ๐Ÿ˜€

I really enjoyed the dinner at TCC cause the food was good. ๐Ÿ™‚ However I was pretty disappointed with the Ying & Yang bar because there was a miscommunication with my reservation. I reserved for 20 but ended up with 6?! >: ( Thankfully they managed to resolved it but it was unfortunate that we went after a rain so it was pretty hot and humid at the alfresco rooftop bar. Thankfully I asked the girls to retire to the room first cause the rain came pouring down while I was settling the bill and while the boys waited with me… Settling the bill was… another nightmare cause it was super crowded, plus confusion from the rain and I didn’t transfer enough cash into my current account (from my savings account, gasp!) so I had to ask a friend to foot half of it first, lol! All in all I don’t think the bar was a good idea although the drinks (and arguably, service) were pretty good. But the crowd was mainly caucasians and the music was mehhh.

The Club Hotel was pretty good though! My friends were pretty impressed with the place, especially with the decor and the white carpet (a lot more so than I was, haha) so it’s a place I’d go back, for a cosy night with fewer people/head count. ๐Ÿ™‚

All in all I think the party was a success, I enjoyed the parts of spontaneity, like the surprise cake for me at TCC but unfortunately my friends and I were mostly tired/exhausted from work/internship/army/uni-camps that we just didn’t have the stamina nor mood to last through the night. That made me pretty disappointed and I kicked a small fuss (pseudo mad, saying “like that la, leave early when I booked you 3 weeks in advance” talk) with the boys who had to leave early. (Even though after they left, all we did was just sleep cause really we were too tired, HAHA)

On the whole I’d say I enjoyed the experience and I think it’s a success if my friend enjoyed themselves. Hopefully they weren’t just placating me when they say they did. But truthfully I felt pretty down after the party, partly because of PMS (aka pre-menstrual syndromes) which made me emo (plus bloated which sucked max cause I looked fatter in my birthday photos, sigh). And the whole prep of this birthday party and post party made me sad cause I’d rather not celebrate my birthday because I think the whole point of birthdays is for others to celebrate/kick a big fuss over you. But I guess this time round, I decided to do it mostly for my friends(part get-to-gether, part dressing up in fun) and I think I’d consider it worth while. But I guess it’s fair to say that while I did enjoy myself, and I don’t regret organizing it, I’d still rather if someone else did the whole hoo-ha for me instead.

And I think the thing that made me most upset was this time around, people that I was really close to and mattered a lot to me, just wasn’t around. Maybe it’d be fairer to say that people who are supposedly closer to me, disappointed me. I don’t think it’s unfair for me to expect of certain things. But also with time, I’ve come to accept not to have much expectations so I won’t be disappointed. Honestly, I don’t care much about my birthday, especially this year. I did this 21st birthday really for the heck of it. Ever since I was 19, I don’t really care about my birthday.

Side tracking, this year felt pretty weird, cause I celebrated it on 15 July and 17 July itself I didn’t treat or felt as if it was my birthday, lol. I met up with a group of friends and only 2 out of 6 know it’s my birthday and they didn’t celebrate for/with me. I’d be disappointed 2 years back, but now It’s not that I don’t care, but I accept that certain people/friends are like that.

Ok, the thing is birthday happens to be a good indication of who you’re closer to, who bothers to celebrate with you/facebook/sms you. And although I fully agree that friendship isn’t based on what he/she does on your birthday, it happens to be a pretty good indication for me, between my best friends. And I guess, in this case(s), disappointment isn’t the word. But that the prognosis is simply that we are no longer as close as we use to be and its a little saddening. And the realisation hits me that I’m just not close to any people in particular anymore. Increasingly I keep all my private and not so private thoughts to myself, my blog and my twitter, and that’s sad. Although looking on the bright side, I have also made new friends via my blog and twitter, haha.

So moving on, life’s like that. We move on, we meet new friends. We keep in contact with old friends, we deepen or we could burn old ties. It all depends, but all I can say is that it takes two to clap and though I admit I can be pretty cold and aloof, many times it also happens to the the people I meet, the friends I make that made me this way. Oof!

I sure am not as optimistic as I was before, but it isn’t to say that I’d remain this way. I’ve had a negative outlook for a long time and I’d like a positive change right about now. I’ve shared a lot more than I intended and it’s time for me to go sleep!

Let another week of work begin and then 1 week of real holiday then school! Ah! I just can’t believe time flies so quickly!

I don’t spend more than what I have and I save. Don’t make assumptions like I’m overspending and that hanging out with rich friends is bringing me astray. Have the basic courtesy to talk to me and not make an ass out of you and me.ย You may not earn a lot and I don’t remember asking for anything big ticketed (except for $3000 to Italy for a school art trip). And I am always careful to make my requests known politely and I never demand that they be granted. I am always thinking of what I jobs I can do to earn my own money and buy things I want instead of asking you for money. Shouldn’t you be pleased with that?ย No, you had to think that maybe hanging out with a rich friend is leading me astray and making me have a wild fantasy about life and spending money like water. I’m sorry to inform you but just like you, I work and I know how hard it is to earn money and I sure as hell don’t have wild fantasies of life. Other than the taxi fares I pay for to go to work in the morning when I am running late (which is super far away and during peak hour, fml), there is nothing else major and that can be considered a “luxury” that I spend on. Which eye of yours sees me spending and on what items?ย Maybe the worse part of this whole fiasco is that I only know what you said after hearing about it from my sister’s mouth who ALSO thinks like you do and has no right to lecture me without getting the facts right. And that I am retarded-ly typing these out on my blog to rant without you ever getting to know of it. At least not now cause I am way too upset, too hurt and too sad and sure to flare up and cry like no one’s business if I were to face you in the hall right now.ย Maybe I’m feeling all these because I just don’t measure up to your other two daughters. One was on scholarship and often refused money you offered. The other is on scholarship and is doing so well that she’s paid generously on internship. I’m sorry I’m not as good as them two. I’m sorry If I am asking for too much sometimes. Sometimes I feel it, that I’m a disappointment and maybe it would have been a wiser choice if you had decided to abort me 21 years back.ย I know I can be ungrateful and rude and a disappointment. I may not be making a big effort to be a sensible child but you sure aren’t making it any easier for me either.

Book Recommendation: God Shaped Hole by Tiffanie Debartolo

Trivia before I commence the post: The title was one of the reasons why I picked up the book because I wanted to know what a love story about a God Shaped Hole will unravel.

God Shaped Hole by Tiffanie Debartolo is a mainly a love story about Beatrice “Trixie” Jordan and Jacob Grace, written in Beatrice’s ย perspective. It seems like a typical romance story at first glance but upon further reading, one will discover it is anything but typical.

The love story starts fast and furious via an interesting encounter when Beatrice responds to an ad that says, “If your Intentions are Pure, I’m seeking a Friend for the End of the World”.

What starts out as a trial for both individuals blossoms quickly into a beautiful and realistically portrayed romance; entailing the quirky, creative couple’s (Beatrice’s a jewellery designer and Jacob’s a writer) idiosyncrasies and behavior at family and friends gatherings.

Readers will discover the irony upon reading that both main leads acknowledges a God shaped hole within them and all men but does not acknowledge the power of the One.

The story is written in a vivid and arresting manner, that perhaps comes with author Debartolo’s screen-writing experiences. I can imagine the story being translated into an indie film (one that I’d definitely watch and cry.)

The very poignant ending left me with tears in my eyes and is likely to leave one reflecting upon certain helpless moments in life when you know that something is about to happen but there is nothing you can do. I cannot specifically remember anything like that in my life but it impacted me and left me feeling pretty emotional.

I’d recommend this book for its realistically written characters that I’ve come to adore and for its ability to make you feel for them as they experience sadness and joy.

I borrowed the book from the Bedok Public Library Branch. You may check out or purchase the book hereย (Amazon).

Do comment if this recommendation makes you interested to read the book. Also I’m looking for good books to read, do recommend me if you have any! You may also drop suggestions for my future book reviews. ๐Ÿ™‚

Book Review: Norwegian Wood by Haruki Murakami

Hi guys! This is my first book review blog post, hope you’ll like it. I decided to write book reviews because it’s a good way to summarize the story as well as introduce to you books that I read. Do drop me book recommendations under comments! ๐Ÿ™‚

Norwegian Wood by Haruki Murakami is a story written in the male protagonist, Toru’s perspective in post war Japan about how he deals with loss and love.

Norwegian Woodย is definitely not just another predictable romance story. Written in the perspective of the male protaganist, it’s likely a book that boys can appreciate better than girls.ย I find the male perspective to be interesting, to see the world through a male’s eyes.ย Girls might appreciate the book as it provides a peek into the minds of boys.

The story is sensual and provocative. Many times I find myself reading through salacious scenes on the train, looking up to check that people are not reading what I’m reading. The sensual scenes are not written like those run-of-the-mill B-grade novels that is filled with tawdry descriptions but rather it is written with literary flair, in an innocent and beautiful light.

I like that the book touches on issues on death, sickness, mental illness as the main themes of the story. Issues that are very intimate, personal and real and rarely the core themes of a romance story. Perhaps that is why this book creates an impact all around the world from decades ago till today.

The story is very much anchored in post modern mentality where there is no judgement on the characters, no matter what actions they take. No matter the severity of the action, it is treated in a matter-of-fact manner, like just a phase of life. The story doesn’t delve into the reasons for Toru’s best friend, Kizuki’s death. In fact the reason is unknown. Perhaps it’s due to Kizuki’s girlfriend, Naoko’s illness but perhaps Naoko’s illness is perpetuated by Kizuki’s death. Neither does the story justify or makes judgement on Toru and his friend, Nagasawa’s philandering ways.

The story is believable in all points except for Naoko’s “retreat” somewhere far out in the countryside. Perhaps the physical retreat, an “asylum” of sorts for the people is meant to be a metaphor of mental escapism for burdened and worn out city-dwellers. Maybe it’s something that really exists in the Japanese culture but it definitely comes across as queer and fantastical, which does not fit well with the story.

Set in a post-war Japan, the entangled romance and friendships between characters are intertwined with patriotic or pseudo-patriotic protests in Toru’s college. The story conveys the very sense of loss, helplessness and acceptance of tragedies experienced by Japanese in the post-war era.

The book is not a favourite for me but it’s definitely a good book for anyone looking for something light to read. It would definitely appeal to anyone who has interest in the Japanese culture. ๐Ÿ™‚

Thank God for good health! :)

My mother is not having a case of a tumour re-growth but rather a hormonal imbalance that’s been causing her lethargy and headaches! So thank God! ๐Ÿ˜€

It’s really a case of doctor’s mis-communication because the hormonal doctor wanted to wait and consult the brain tumour doctor before administering medicine but the brain tumour doctor was like, no it’s ok, the hormonal doc can go ahead it’s got nothing to do with brain tumour and in the end no medicine was given for my mother’s condition and hence she experienced headaches, vomiting and admission to A&E… Stupid doctors.

But we’re superrr glad she’s ok now after having the right dosage of hormonal medicine as well as sodium (which she was lacking but to reasons unknown) she’s recovering well! ๐Ÿ˜€

THANK GOD for His providence!!!

My mum is currently in a C-class, 7 beds ward. On her right is an Indian lady who recently had her foot or a part of her foot amputated due to gangrene caused by diabetes. She was mostly half asleep during my hour plus long visit and was moaning in pain. I felt really bad for her to be suffering so much physically.

On my mum’s left is a Malay lady whom I’m not sure what illness she’s suffering but she seemed quite bored as she was playing with a gadget that seemed like an I-touch and was playing oldies like “Sunshine in the rain” and “All by myself”. She didn’t have any visitors while we were there during visiting hours and she even had a plastic bowl of chips which I found quite amusing.

Opposite to the Malay lady was a Chinese lady whom I overhead the nurse telling her son to advise and motivate the mother to stand and walk around as lying in bed all day does not improve the condition and in fact causes a whole lot of other problems like constipation and lack of blood circulation.

A trip to the hospital is always a sobering one. After my mum’s two brain tumour operations and my sister’s several also brain tumour and shunt operations, my family is quite familiar to hospital visits. But seeing people suffering physically is always a good reminder to be thankful for our abled bodies and good health that God blesses us with.
