100 Friends 100 Artists 100 Inspirations & More

Now that I am settling into my internship(more about that later), I finally have time for my blog! πŸ™‚

100 Friends 100 Artists 100 Inspiration exhibition is currently held at TCC @ Clarke Quay (near Raffles Place Mrt). The exhibition is managed byΒ Art-management. It’s a celebration of Phunk Studio as they invite 100 friends to create 100 artworks – each piece representing something, someone that inspires them. Subject varies from animals to families, lovers, artists and for myself, a Singaporean fashion visionary Tjin Lee.Β :)

Each artwork will be sold at $199 per piece. $99 will go to funding Transmission Lab 2012 exhibition which will be held next February, showcasing the artworks of up and coming creative Singapore talents.

Photo time! πŸ™‚

With my group members under Trans. Lab 2011-12, Joyce Lee and Wanqi, both with design and illustration background. πŸ™‚

Together with our mentor, William and his super cute and adorable son. πŸ™‚Candid shot of us admiring the brochure. πŸ™‚

My artwork. I am inspired by local fashion visionary and game-changer, Tjin Lee, founder of Mercury M&C, organizing company for Audi Fashion Festival and Blueprint! πŸ™‚

This is my write-up for my artwork:

Tjin Lee is a Singaporean woman that inspires me. As the founder of the PR and events management company Mercury Marketing and Communications and Audi Fashion Festival director, she has increased Singapore’s awareness of fashion and level of fashion by bringing in top international designers in the past years. She is inspiring to a fashion student like myself because she is visionary, believing that Singapore can be a great fashion capital years ago and has played a great part for the fashionable city that Singapore is today!

My artwork about Tjin Lee is executed in scrapbook–style, a collection of bits and pieces about her that inspires a fan. The use of black and white traditional damask print complements Lee’s elegance while the orange rose and hues expresses her warmth and friendliness that she exudes in person. Lastly I hope that her quote β€˜I… march to the beat of a different drum.’ continues to inspire many more to take the lead and take the less-travelled paths.

Posing with my artwork. πŸ™‚

This is one of my favourite artwork in the exhibition, it is done by my CCS (cultural and contextual studies) tutor, Lucinda and it’s kind of like a romantic tribute to her lover… Aww!!! I texted her to tell her I liked it a lot. πŸ™‚ It was sold already (red dot) and we wonder who could have bought it…? πŸ˜›

Funny profile pic of an artist ! Hahaha πŸ™‚

Do go down and check out the exhibition at Clarke Quay! 50% of the artworks are sold and will be taken down by 15 Dec if they are sold, if not they will be on display till January! Hurry go down and purchase the artworks while they are still available, support local arts, support Transmission Lab 2011/12 and support yours truly! πŸ™‚

About 3 weeks ago, Jacq invited Char and I to attend IS Magazine bash at Avalon. Wondering what IS Mag bash might have in store, I decided to attend to take a look. It was terrrible to say the least. We went down at about 11pm and queued for about 30min to be told that drinks were no longer free-flow and there is only one bar open/bartender giving drinks and it wasn’t the one that we were queuing at. The music was bad, it was so very super packed, all I remembered was noise and there was no host or entertainment of any sort. Disappointed, we left without a single sip or drinks. Although there was a small door gift of Β the Face Shop facial mask and other samples… I don’t think it was worth the trip.

Fortunately, there was another event which took us by pleasant surprise. Jacq was invited to attend Heineken underground music festival which was held at what seemed like an abandoned warehouse at Stadium link, near Katong (and $8 cab fare away from my home, yay).En route to the party place.

Jacq signing in while we await for our passes as her guests. πŸ™‚

The first set that we heard playing was by an indie musician from UK, London. I think his name was James. The music was very strong in bass and vocals, like acoustic with strong beats. At times pretty trance and hypnotic which was… very unfortunately not Char or my kind of thing/music. HAHA. Well, we were each given a complimentary full bottle of Heineken plus the enthusiasm of the crowd bobbing to his music really made the event enjoyable.

I left early that night but not without a picture with the lovely girls! πŸ™‚

Myself, Jacq and Char.

Onward Japanese Fashion Show | ICB, DipDrops & Rosebullet

Thanks to HEAT Branding,Β through a competition held on Insing.com , I won tickets to visit Onward Kashiyama Fall/Winter 2011 Fashion Showcase @ Avalon. The original price of the ticket which includes access and one drink was $35 and I won tickets for a guest and myself! There were many Japanese that paid to watch the show that night, I am so blessed! πŸ™‚

If you read my last article, you would know that I invited Gilda of Revasseur to attend the show with me.

That night, Onward Kashiyama Japanese fashion house introduced three retail concepts in a high-energy creative presentation.Β Invited guests and media were shown a premier showcase of the ICB, Rosebullet and DipDrops Autumn/Winter collections. πŸ˜€

I’ll let the photos do the talking~ Credits to Gilda for the sharp images and no credits to me for the blurry ones. πŸ˜›

ICB features grown up, office lady looks.

Before DipDrops came on, there was a live hair show by Shunji Matsuo featuring Malaysian blogger Cheesie of Cheeserland as model! πŸ˜€

Second in line, DipDrops FW 2011 collection had a distinctive British influence to it.

Lastly, Rosebullet showed a mixed collection of urban and laidback country floral styles. Before the models came strutting in, there seemed like a group of ‘normal’ girls prancing on the stage and then they settled in a corner of the stage, drinking champagne. We had no idea who they were and what they were doing but they did bring some entertainment. Perhaps Rosebullet was trying to convey that the ‘everyday’ girl can look equally charming, cute and attractive as the professional models. πŸ™‚

To end off, a cute albeit blurry photo taken with Gilda and Kenneth and Andrew, designers of Depression! πŸ™‚

They gave out really nice canvas tote bag with vouchers as door gifts! Sorry I won’t be posting photos of them cause I gave the vouchers away! πŸ™‚ If you fancy the clothes, do visit Dip Drops at 313@Somerset (#03-09/10) or at the Rosebullet boutique located at Marina Bay Sands (B2-116, Canal Level)! πŸ˜‰

Can’t get enough? Check out FeverAvenue’s more thorough coverage of the show here. πŸ˜‰
School’s out and internship’s (sadly not holiday :/) in! I received positive news last Friday that I was given an internship placement with French Chambre of Commerce Singapore (FCCS). I am glad and I hope to put my limited French to good use and pick up a lot more in my 2 months there!
Blogging really takes time, hopefully I will be able to keep up and have more interesting stuff to blog about! πŸ˜› I have so many stuff to blog about… My recent occupation with end of year’s presentations and submissions have resulted in blogging ‘back log’ :/ For a long ‘preview’, next up will be the 100 Friends Exhibition and I will combine that with a night out with Jacq and Char where we went for a very uneventful magazine bash but followed by a very interesting beer celebration… Next next will probably be a short one on my first halloween ‘party’ experience! πŸ˜‰
That’s all for now, wishing all of you the best of health and a blessed week ahead! <3

Into the swirling memory bowl – Mid Oct 2011

Bonsoir!

Just some quick updates about my personal life, which I have not done so for quite some time now, as I have been mostly updating on the fashionable events I’ve attend.

I am very thankful to God for completing and successfully submitting Finance assessment paper this morning. Am actually suffering from the fatigue of staying up late and waking up early to complete the assignment due to bad time management and ill-discipline from being distracted by internet (sigh)…

I have just completed 2 months worth of french elementary 1 course, held every tuesday and thursday nights! In a quick recap, I am now able to pronounce in french A-Z, 1-100, introduce myself, mastered a limited but increasing list of vocabulary such as countries, occupations and subjects. I am struggling with remembering feminine prefix – la and masculine prefix – le. I hope to be more acquainted with the french culture to inspire and motivate my learning. I also hope that I will soon be able to speak and think comfortably in french! A faraway dream as of now, but definitely a great ambition!

School work is piling up like a huge mountain as submissions and presentations are all nearing. Scheduling really helps put things in perspective and helps with prioritization. Was initially quite worried last weekend about not being to finish work but after scheduling, there was actually sufficient time. But turns out, our tutors have postponed 1 submission and 1 presentation. I feel sad that our misery is prolonged (not actually sure if we will put in more effort, but now there is no reason not to do better.) but on the bright side, I am relieved and should be happy for the extra time to do things even better, more time for details. πŸ˜‰

Time is really flying by like crazy all of a sudden. It’s October and soon the year will be over. @-@ I am grateful because I’ve been superbly (and happy to be) busy with many activities with friends and communities. Other than school, church, attending events with lovely friends and learning French, I am also involved with Transmission Lab 2011-2012 hosted by Phunk Studio.

A week ago I attended a fashion show showcasing Japanese brands Rosebullet, ICB by Onward fashion group. I won the tickets and I asked Gilda, fashion designer and genius behind the homegrown(but with American design background and Japanese quirky sensibilities) label Revasseur to attend with me. I will do a proper introduction about Gilda and Revasseur in a future post. I am super happy and honoured that she agreed to collaborate with me to create an artwork under Trans. Lab program. I am very excited to discuss more with her about our collaboration once school’s out. πŸ™‚

And last night saw the opening of 100 Friends 100 Artists 100 Inspiration exhibition held at TCC @ Clarke Quay (near Raffles Place Mrt). The exhibition is managed by Art-management. It’s a celebration of Phunk Studio as they invite 100 friends to create 100 artworks – each piece representing something, someone that inspires them. Subject varies from animals to families, lovers, artists and for myself, a Singaporean fashion visionary Tjin Lee. πŸ™‚

Each artwork will be sold at $199 per piece. $99 will go to funding Transmission Lab 2012 exhibition which will be held next February, showcasing the artworks of up and coming creative Singapore talents (including Gilda and myself). I am beyond honoured and often catch myself smiling silly (and feeling inadequate) to know that I am in such talented company. I am very humbled and I do hope to make a positive contribution and positive impact to the local arts and design community. πŸ™‚

As this is a short recap, I will update more photos for Onward fashion show and 100 Friends exhibition another time, soon. So look out for updates. πŸ˜‰

Lastly I am going for my first internship interview tomorrow and I really hope all things go well and that I get the position. Will update more about it if I get it. *Excited*

Launch of Women’s Fashion Week 2011 Haute Couture Exhibition at Marina Bay Sands

Last Thursday, my girlfriends Bini, Kat and I attended VIP Launch of Women’s Fashion Week Haute Couture Exhibition, thanks to Senatus, the online magazine that’s bringing us all these fashion goodness. πŸ™‚

We had classes in the day, so we proceeded to Bini’s pad to watch half a movie (Drag Me to Hell which was too much for me to bear, so I pleaded / took the remote and shut it :P) before we freshen up and change for the night’s event! We also took the opportunity to spam some photos. ^^V

I really like my new bangs with a new coat of purple dye! ^^

Here’s a picture of us posted on Senatus website. πŸ™‚

A selection of dresses by the 8 french hautes couturiers were on exhibition. Here are just a few that were presented!

This dress is designed by Eymeric Francois.

This is by Gustavo Lins. I like the warrior-like buckle elements of the dress.I forgot to note who designed this purple dress, but it’s one of the most striking coloured dress exhibited. *Update* This dress is designed by Maxime Simoens! πŸ™‚The reason why I post about this dress is because…Blair from Gossip Girl wore it! She is wearing a dress by Maxime Simoens. Note a funny looking Serena standing behind her. πŸ˜›Β Chairman of WFW 2011 was there to greet the press and VIPs. He says it will be the first time 8 french haute couturiers will be showing outside of Paris! It is such a landmark fashion event, happening in Singapore. πŸ™‚A short preview collection byΒ Alexis Mabille! He says this is a teaser of what he will be showcasing, all of the dresses are white because during his actual runway collection he will showcase his coloured dresses. The models look like fairies in these dresses. There is an ethereal feel and they remind me of how the female immortals dress like in old chinese dramas!Β Guess where we went after the event?

MBS Cold Storage Specialty store! HAHA.

I thought it’d be funny to take photos with the food and stock. So here are a few goofy shots of us!

With Andy Warhol’s favourite and approved Campbell Soup Can.
One shot of the Queen of Poses!
I meant to head home after the event because I was lugging a big bag but my girlfriends Bel and Jacq convinced me to head out to Overeasy to meet new friends and some drinks. After some drinks our new friends brought us to Avalon as they got us on their friend’s list for the night. So there I was, back at MBS for the second time that night. Haha. The night was uneventful for me, but I can’t say the same for the other girls. πŸ˜› In anycase, here’s the beautiful scenery just outside the club.

Back in those days, Nanyang (as Singapore was then known) was the stuff of dreams. Now in the 21st century, it still is the stuff of dreams and many more to come. πŸ˜€

Wishing you a blessed week ahead! Wish me all the best in finding and securing a wonderful internship! I need your prayers!

Robinsons x Mio TV Prime Time Fall Fashion at Avalon Singapore

Hello hello! How’s your October coming along? πŸ˜‰

Sometime during September, I was invited to Robinsons x Mio TV Prime Time Fall Fashion. Clara of Nom-media (Nuffnang, Churp Churp) called me to confirm my invitation. Clara also invited Eileen, my friend and ex-colleague as they are very close friends. Do check out Eileen’s blog Sylelyn, which I’ve also linked by the side bar! I was very glad Eileen also attended the event and that we got to catch up after a longgg time! x)

Amanda, Clara, Eileen and myself πŸ˜‰

It was very disappointing that the event started very late. We were invited to arrive at 7.30pm but the show only started at 9.40pm. I was particularly sad that I missed my French class from 7-9pm. I could have attend my French class and still made it for the show. πŸ™

Thankfully though, that the fashion show itself was great, it combined both aspects of Robinson’s fashion labels and Mio TV’s upcoming season shows very well. Videos of the shows that inspired the Fall fashion would play before the models came down the runway. πŸ™‚

Unfortunately for me, I forgot to bring my camera. o.O This kind of shows that I’m not really clue-d into the whole blogger identity yet. Oops! So the pictures are taken by pretty Elizabeth, a friend of Eileen and Clara whom I met at the event! πŸ™‚ Do check out her blog here. πŸ™‚

A preview of the shows that Singtel Mio TV has to offer this Fall:

Some of the brands that were showcased includes Eryn Brinie and Rebecca Minkoff. Β Most bloggers probably don’t post the gift-bags that the sponsors give away but I like to do so anyway! I mean, who’s not interested to know what the give away includes? πŸ˜›

Each gift bag includes a Mio TV tissue box, samples from Kiehl’s and a press release folder. πŸ™‚Here’s what’s inside the Kiehl’s sample set. My friend gave me no.4 blemish clearing control. I’ve been using it and I feel that it’s very mild but it does work. It also has a medicated scent which I find oddly nice. I would like to use their lip balm someday! We were also given hair-conditioner sample (has to be redeemed at the store). That’s all for the event! Next up, Women’s Fashion Week 2011 VIP Reception and Press Announcement at Marina Bay Sands! πŸ™‚

Chanel Fall Winter 2011 Fashion Runway in Singapore

Hello~!

Not too long ago, Bini invited me to attend another fashion event, Chanel Fall Winter 2011 Fashion Runway in Singapore. It was held at Red Dot Museum.

Individual portraits of Bini and I after the show on the ‘runway’.

Doors open for the event at 7.30pm but the event didn’t start until 8.15pm. So there was a holding area withΒ hors d’oeuvres and champagnes served for guest. Then Chanel also entertained guests with two musicians, one playing a modern looking violin and another playing a saxophone, with music blasting. It was pretty interesting as they were trying to interact with the audience (while some scoot away cause they were pretty intimidating). Sorry, no photos of them to show you!

According to FashionOdor.com,

β€œThe world is a dark place,” is what the brilliant Karl Lagerfeld said about the inspiration of Chanel Fall/Winter 2011RTW show. Placed in the midst of the fog-shrouded forest, with black sand, volcanic rocks and images of burned trees, the show had a sense of apocalyptic grandeur accentuated by Michel Gaubert’s orchestral interpretation of the Cure’s classic β€œA Forest”. Colored in black and ashy tones, the collection blended perfectly with the show’s gloomy setting. The collection abounded with brilliant pieces such as wool jackets, pleated tanks, loose pants and tweed jumpsuits whose men size proportions and the unfinished , distressed hems added a final touch to Karl’s dark vision for this season. What we liked the most about it, is the sense of ease and non-challance, complemented by the β€˜gothic meets grunge’ feeling.

Take a look at the video of the Chanel Fall Winter 2011 and listen to the music. The experience I had in Singapore was a pared down, miniature version of the actual set that you’ll see in the video. But the clothes and the music are the same.

Some of the images Bini and I captured during the show.

Personally the collection wasn’t too my liking because in my opinion, cuffed trousers with boots, it was simply too bo-ho for Chanel.

But here are a few designs that I think are lovely. Images are taken from FashionOdor.

I like the heeled boots and the delicate and elegant decorations such as buttons, brooch on the jackets and dress. They represent and showcase the heritage and sophistication of Chanel. πŸ™‚

Chanel also gave away goodie bags for guests. The big black paperbag contained the smaller white bag with cosmetics, the Fall Winter look-book and brochure for their J-12 Chromatic watch.

The look book stars female model Freja Beha Erichsen and male model Baptiste Giabiconi.

Some of the images within the look-book! πŸ™‚

A photo of the J 12 Chromatic within the brochure:And Chanel’s gift for guests, a nail polish in Graphite colour and eyeshadow pot in Ombre. πŸ™‚Another sweet gift from Chanel. They printed the photo that was taken upon entrance and passed it to us in a card-like hard paper frame. πŸ™‚All in all the Chanel Fall Winter 2011 runway experience was a very enjoyable one for me. Even though the guests who were invited were mostly late 20s onwards and quite a few foreigners (so we didn’t quite feel comfortable interacting with them), I think viewing the collection in person was really a treat. Many thanks again to Bini who invited me along as her plus one! πŸ™‚

Coming up next, my experience at Robinson X Singtel Mio TV Prime Time Fall Fashion show at Avalon.

Robinsons and mio TV presents PRIMETIME FALL FASHION

Hello all readers!

Sorry I’ve not been updating for almost two weeks! Pretty ironic as I had a school break for the whole of last week but I didn’t update because I was sick and still had to prepare for a CCS presentation today! Thankfully I’ve recovered since and the presentation today went well! Hallelujah! πŸ˜€

As you can tell, my post today is mainly to inform you, if you don’t already know, thatΒ Robinsons is collaborating with mio TV to present PRIMETIME FALL FASHION! You can join in the fun by checking outΒ http://www.nuffnang.com.sg/robinsons/Β ! πŸ˜‰

And since we’re on that topic, I shall show you a few images that I think are the BEST of Fall Winter 2011! Awesome or what? Here we go!

Starting with Givenchy‘s iconic prints on a bright yellow to chase your winter (or rainy for that matter, in Singapore) blues away. I love Givenchy’s entire FW 2011 collection btw. Their prints on scarf are definitely collector’s item and their fierce Rottweilers T-shirt designs have already sold out!

Before Bini and I attended Hermes’ launch party for their showcase at Paragon almost two weeks back, we visited the Givenchy store and the staff expressed their surprise at how hot the Rottweiler top was. They didn’t think it would spark so much interest and be sold out so quickly. Indeed, fashion is a capricious industry, there’s no telling which is the next item and why! Although the reason could very well be associated to the media – publicity made it popular. Although it could also possibly that people just liked the print and how ferocious it looks, a like tattoo design.

Next up, I am loving these summery colours on Fall Winter clothings… You simply can’t take away the summer love in me.

60’s Mod look in Pink and Orange combi from Bottega Veneta.

YSL – can’t really tell if this is a dress or a a coat with a furry or feathery skirt – in bright plume. And of course, we can’t go through Fall Winter without having some of Burberry goodness.

Β I simply love the berets and the simplicity in colours, it’s tres parisian. I love how the arms of the red coat poufs up like princess sleeves and the white coat reminds me of a poodle! Both coats are fit for a princess.

Talking about princess, leads me to the last and my favourite collection out of the lot – Jason Wu’s Fall Winter 2011. The collection is simply sublime. He is said to be inspired by Baroque, which he incorporates in his designs through the lace (also a big Fall /Winter trend). I love the simplicity and refinement of his designs which exudes elegance.

In a series of looks, Wu empowers women with very manly forms that resembles the italian mafia, suit-ed up man and dandy man’s wardrobe respectively…

In another selection of designs, Wu create looks for women that are formal and just enough part of lovely with the prints, lace and dotted leggings without being overly saccharine. And more impressively, they still come across cool in every way. (I am certain the sunglasses had a great part to play.)Lastly Wu’s gowns are simply gorgeous. One’s in my favourite pink and black combination and another beautiful long gown with a sexy high-slit cut.

Ending of with an image of the man himself!

Studded shoes!

I went shopping today! I meant to head down to City Plaza (Near Paya Lebar Mrt Station) to check out the store, Skim. City Plaza has a lot of wholesale/retails stores so you can get clothes at quite a bargain if you buy a few pieces at a go, ideal when shopping with friends! So the store Skim is one such store and I like their designs that I saw on their website. But when I went down to see the pieces, I didn’t buy anything from the store but I ended up with several other stuff from other stores!

Among which are two shoes, like this studded pair…

And this flat with skull decor! πŸ™‚I promised myself that I won’t buy cheap shoes, especially after purchasing Rubi’s 2 for $30 (or something like that) but I couldn’t resist buying these… They were only $12.90 each, I reckoned I should get them cause my heart won’t break even if they do. Lol!

I also got pretty vest, tops and skirts. New clothes for school, yay! It’s nice that I’m a fashion student so I can wear fancy clothes to school when I like it. It can be a pressure to dress up sometimes but we mostly dress simply, albeit with style. πŸ™‚ We don’t wreck our heads as to what we’d wear to school each day (although Bini does sometimes, lol) and when we’re running late, anything goes! Β I think I will try to take more pictures of what my friends and I dress to school when school starts! I dare say that Lasalle students are the coolest and most stylishly dressed bunch in Singapore. πŸ˜‰

School timetable’s not out yet and I was just talking to Azalea, a classmate about it on FB. We are getting quite psyched about school starting and happy that our “orientation” is on Monday morning and not held this week, which is the case for other level 2 fashion comm/design students. Woohoo!

Enjoying my week thus far, hope you are too!

(Belated) June Visual Inspirations!

I didn’t fully upload the images I collected over the last month and more, I’ll upload them with those in the month of July. I’m also lazy to caption them one by one so I’ll just do a collective credit. In no order, the images above are taken from: LaModeOutre, Passivedreams, Altamira, NYmag’s The Cut, Xiaxue, Style Bubble, MDS, The Selby, friends’ Facebook.

What do you think about June’s cut of visual inspiration? It’s got a strong summery feel isn’t it? You’ll also see a lot of rocker chic inspired images for my 21st birthday party! πŸ™‚ You’ll also find quite a bit of photos on Korean celebrities in recent korean dramas that I am watching, like ‘Lie To Me’ and ‘Best Love’. :p

Amongst the fashion photos you’ll also see photos of my ex church cell group leader, Matthew’s wedding! He held a church wedding in Singapore and had a beach wedding in M’sia, where his wife, Janice is from. All the best to Matt and Janice! πŸ™‚

This is already a curated, selection of images of many that I see for the whole month but I think that maybe I should be even more specific and selective. I think it would be a lot more useful to be specific so it helps people who are conducting research online.Β But I really do like all of these images one way or another! It kind of make sense to keep them as keeping an eye on what’s trendy and fashionable. But I don’t know if you all appreciate them… Or am I only satisfying my own vanity in uploading these pretty images on my blog and no one actually appreciates them? :/

I have at least 7 blog post ideas, related to internship, spring/summer fashion highlights, book reviews but I don’t have time/have not planned when I will write them because I usually write my blog posts with spontaneity.

Yea. I am going to rethink how I do this monthly visual inspiration post. Any ideas, anyone? πŸ™‚ Even if it’s to placate me… I wish more people would comment/leave love notes for me here. πŸ˜›

Pictures: MFW Last Day & After Party

MFW was really really enjoyable! I really thank the team for having me with them and thank God for a smooth week. I had a blast working with friends, making new friends, getting friends into the shows! πŸ™‚

The pictures are snippets of MFW, from shows to backstage (think a lot people interested to know what goes on behind the scene haha). I got them mostly from MFW Facebook as well as twitter. πŸ™‚

MFW closing shows and after party was a blast! Martin came down to join the party and we met a lot of old friends and made a lot of new friends. I brought my cam and took pictures with friends from the event for memories’ sake. πŸ˜‰

MFW boss Frank Cintamani boss announced that Women’s Fashion Week’s in October! Not sure if I’ll be able to help out but if it’ll be the same team, I believe it’ll be great fun to work together again.

Audi Fashion Fest (AFF) coming up next in MAY. Missoni will be closing for them. I will send in my application soon. I wanna help out at the Blueprint trade show! πŸ˜€

For now… I will focus on getting my 2 group projects doneee then it’ll be HOLIDAYS! Batam trip with 4Ayers coming right up in May! Yay! πŸ˜€

The Purpose of Fashion

Just the other day I read this column from the Guardian website. Read it for yourself:

Apart from making a few individuals and companies obscenely rich, what purpose does fashion serve? – Pete, by email

Gosh, I don’t know, Pete. Maybe you could tell me what purpose sport serves other than making the very few obscenely rich and the masses fat and lazy from sitting all day watching pointless matches on TV? And I’ve always wondered, what’s the point of the film industry? Or art? Or fancy cars? Or anything, really, that’s not basic, boring and bland?

Obviously there’s no real purpose to fashion in the way there is a purpose to, say, water or the sun. But if one takes for granted that making life that little more enjoyable for those who like it is, in itself, a purpose, then I guess fashion does serve one. More of one for some of us than crummy cricket and flipping football; less of one for others. If you wish to go around town in a burlap sack or a beige boiler suit, by all means, boiler it up to the max. I could launch into some diatribe about fashion being a form of self-expression, art and commerce all combined in one unique form but I see no need for overcompensatory special pleading on fashion’s part. The purpose is the same as the purpose of Premier League football: to make some people very wealthy and to make others forget the pointlessness of existence for at least a few minutes a day. – Hadley Freeman

After reading it, I knew I had to make a stand for myself regarding the purpose of fashion, since I am in this very industry(or studying for it) myself. Yes, ostensibly fashion is very frivolous and seems to serve no real purpose other than the vanity of men and women. However there are many facets to fashion. There may be runway fashion collections that changes every 6 months with each season but there are also certain fashion styles that are classic and never die.

Fashion is a form of individual expression. Singaporeans may not realize this because we are generally a boring lot that grow up within high-rise buildings and grey concrete but the world is our oyster and we can dress to please ourselves, to brighten up our mood as well as others around us.

Fashion conveys attitudes and statuses. You are what you dress. Fashion serves to give you the power to dress to impress, or dress to be inconspicuous. It allows you to stand out from or blend in with the crowd.

Fashion is fantasy, joyful escapism and solid entertainment. The latest trends and vivid colours of fashionable clothes fill the pages of glossy magazines, television and websites. It pleases the eyes of girls who dream of a better life, open minds to different cultures and lifestyles, enriches.

Fashion is not only about enticing the rich to spend their wealth on the lastest “must have/IT” item. It serves the vanity and needs of the rich as well as the poor. Fashion is beauty and so much more. What’s there to not like about Fashion? πŸ™‚

Finance assessment today. Really thankful for my friends Bini and Kat. Revised the Revision paper with them yesterday and Bini called me this morning from my deep slumber or I’d have missed the class assessment altogether! I was pretty nervous about it as it’s the first Finance paper in my life and I only started revision yesterday. πŸ˜› But thank God it went well! I managed to balance the Trial Balance and it was really satisfying.

To remember “Asset + Expenses = Liabilities + Revenue + Capital”
just remember, “After Eating, Let’s Read Comics!” Works like a charm for me. πŸ˜€

My tutor encouraged me to sign up for Transmission Lab, an apprenticeship programme that culminates into an exhibition at the end of the year. I considered for a bit and decided to go for it so I took a while to get everything together and emailed them just now! I’m not sure how it’ll work out. I’ll be praying about it. πŸ™‚

My job search has ceased as of the moment. The two job interviews didn’t end with an offer, most likely because I am a full-time student. I need to brainstorm more on what I can possible offer that can give me a satisfactory pay.

Loss of Innocence

Loss of Innocence By Never Let Me Go
Recent violence in Egypt
Chuck & Blair on Gossip Girl
Fashion spread by photographer Terry Richardson

I think I have reached a state of saturation of violent/sex images from watching/reading news and fashion that seeing such images just doesn’t have a strong impact anymore. I am not saying that I wish to see worse things happening but rather I am so jaded from seeing such images. Jaded from what is happening in the world. Innocence once lost cannot be returned. How does one see from rose-tinted glasses again when the glasses are broken? I wish, I hope for a well of innocence again, of a renewed sense of joy, happiness on seeing colourful balloons, desire to taste cotton candies and be excited about life again.

On another note, Bini told me today that she thinks I’m the type who will attract the bad boy type of boys because I look like a lamb, very docile and submissive. I think I may appear very cheery and happy most of the time and I admit I can be very naive and ignorant (and I like to be in case you are wondering) but I am definitely not a lamb and I do not like bad boys type.

Mariel Clayton – Doll Photographer with a subversive sense of humour

I was looking through my google reader just the other day and I came across an article on Mariel Clayton’s work depicting Barbie as a psycho-killer.

A picture for your reference:Β Ok warning: image is macabre.

I actually really appreciate Clayton’s work. Although the works are really sadistic and macabre but for someone who’s seen macabre art (and news for that matter), her works aren’t that horrific. The amount of details in the images are evident of the effort and work Clayton takes to produce each image/scene. The images leave me with sense of admiration for her craft.

I like the idea of subverting Barbie – the perfect doll – to a crazed persona because Barbie is an idealistic, unrealistic fantasy that is marketed to young girls. I think Clayton is saying that the attractive Barbie, perfect girlfriend / mother material can also be a psychopath killer. Why not?

And another:

I thought this was really funny. It says: Barbie – The Final Chapter. After years of bingeing, purging and boob jobs. Ken tells Barbie he’s leaving her for another younger, thinner… man.

Alright, to wash your mind of those scary images above, check out Clayton’s cute albeit lethal Barbie image.

The title says “Happy Chew Ears!” How cute! Ok wait… on closer look is that actually a plate of ears?

To illustrate the influence/impact of Barbie on the modern world of fashion, I’ll end off the post with a Barbie doll-like image of Alessandra Ambrosio on Love Magazine:
